Abstract

La region del Carare esta ubicada en los Santanderes, en un enclave que fue fundamental para la aparicion de bosques madereros y en una zona de transito entre la provincia del Catatumbo y el suroriente del pais. Durante el periodo de la Nueva Granada, la zona se denomino la “isla del Carare” por cuenta de las dificultades naturales y topograficas que hacian ardua la entrada a la region. La region estaba atravesada por el denominado “camino del Carare” con el proposito de fortalecer la intercomunicacion regional entre el nororiente y suroriente del pais; a su alrededor, se tejieron los principales asentamientos humanos de esta zona: Bolivar y Cimitarra, los municipios mas prosperos de la region (Acosta, 1993).
