The second half of the 2000s to the 2010s was a period of rapid economic development in the Shaanxi Province, with the economic structure restructuring and the declining role of energy resources. During this period, it was important for Shaanxi, as a region heterogeneous in many aspects, to develop a strategy of specialization of three big areas within the province to ensure comprehensive development. Attempts to apply different approaches to the development of three large regions: the north, center and south of the province have been made since the reform and opening-up policy began, but the most successful experience has been the coordinated development strategy of the three big areas adopted in 2006, which has helped to achieve a more even development of the areas and reverse the situation where the central Guanzhong area was far ahead of the northern and southern districts in economic development. The paper explores the background of the strategy, its implementation, and the results of its implementation over 18 years, and analyses its impact on the economic development of Shaanxi Province.
