Abstract

Variable foreign language training in a non-linguistic university is aimed at creating conditions for mastering a professionally-oriented foreign language based on the educational needs and characteristics of students. Variability is realized through the use of basic and additional educational options. The basic options contain the minimum necessary set of language means necessary for the implementation of future professional activities. Additional options include the maximum set of language means. Establishing the maximum set is crucial for the organization, management, control, and evaluation of foreign language training of students. The way of establishing the minimum and maximum set of language means can be the design of a communicative task based on the work function stated in the professional standard. It is noted that the selection of language means is based on the functionality and frequency of use of language units and the cognitive conditions of mastering the material.
