Abstract

este artículo analizó el drama social suscitado por la creación y circulación de libelos difamatorios en las ciudades de Ibagué, Mariquita y Tocaima del Nuevo Reino de Granada en 1577, a partir del estudio de un proceso judicial poco explorado por la historiografía. A través de una perspectiva de estudio de caso con enfoque sociocultural, se examinaron las prácticas de producción y difusión de estos papeles anónimos, su contenido visual y textual, y las formas en que expresaban y canalizaban conflictos vecinales, disputas de honra y tensiones sociales en el Nuevo Reino de Granada. Las fuentes judiciales permitieron explorar la dimensión simbólica del libelo como herramienta cultural y retórica, así como los efectos sociales y jurídicos que su uso desencadenó. En última instancia, el caso evidenció cómo el arte, la escritura y la circulación de mensajes injuriosos podían convertirse en delito, y cómo su represión por parte de las autoridades coloniales respondía no solo a la búsqueda de justicia, sino también a la necesidad de restituir el orden social y moral a través del castigo público y performativo.
