Abstract

Cet article traite du récit autobiographique en miniature de W. G. Sebald, Die Alpen im Meer (2001) et examine la fonction que revêt la description de la chasse et de la mise à mort d’animaux dans le contexte d’un récit sur la destruction humaine. Le caractère particulièrement pertinent du personnage du chasseur dans Die Alpen im Meer est souligné par la référence intertextuelle très détaillée que Sebald fait au récit de Gustave Flaubert, La Légende de saint Julien l’Hospitalier, publié en 1877, qui est également examiné de près dans cette analyse dans le cadre d’une lecture comparative. Il s’agit en particulier de montrer comment certaines omissions et modifications dans le traitement du pré-texte conduisent à mettre l’accent de manière spécifique sur le thème de la chasse et de la mise à mort des animaux et à le présenter (d’une manière finalement partiellement anthropocentrique) comme un pivot de l’histoire de la destruction humaine.
