Abstract

La obesidad es uno de los mayores problemas de la salud pública en la actualidad, su origen es complejo y multifactorial. En el presente artículo se revisan de forma exhaustiva los aspectos relacionados con la importancia de la obesidad como problema de salud, su fisiopatología, así como sus factores condicionantes. Por otra parte se abordan los éxitos y fracasos de diferentes regímenes dietéticos utilizados en el tratamiento de esta enfermedad, los efectos beneficiosos de las dietas de muy bajas calorías y en especial la dieta de Cambridge; no sólo en la reducción del peso corporal, sino también en la mejoría de los cuadros clínicos de otras enfermedades relacionadas con las obesidad como la hipertensión, la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y la dislipidemias, así como la disminución sustancial en las dosis de medicamentos utilizados en su controlObesity is one of the greatest problems of public health at present. Its origin is complex and multifactorial. In the present paper, those aspectes related to the importance of obesity as a health problem, its physiopathology, as well as its conditioning factors are exhaustively reviewed. The failures and successes of different diet therapies used in the treatment of this disease, the beneficial effects of very low calory diets and ,specially, the Cambridge diet are approached not only as regards the reduction of body weight, but also the improvement of clinical pictures of other diseases connected with obesity, such as hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus and dislipidaemias, and the significant reduction in the doses of drugs used for its control
