Abstract

Este artigo está estruturado a partir de associações entre o turismo, o turismo de luxo, a produção e a (re)estruturação do espaço, as redes sociais virtuais e a distinção social. O procedimento metodológico que conduziu as nossas reflexões foi a revisão bibliográfica. Assim, este artigo é, além de um ensaio teórico, uma análise alicerçada em algumas pesquisas. Dentre as discussões tecidas, enfatizamos que o turismo – para além do turismo de luxo – pode ser interpretado pela lente da distinção social. Enquanto os estratos socioeconômicos não privilegiados buscam, mesmo que de forma efêmera, a distinção social por meio do turismo, os estratos socioeconômicos privilegiados encontram na atividade turística um instrumento potente para atestar a distinção. Destacamos, a partir de Taveira (2016) e de Pimentel (2020), que o turismo está associado à ampliação do capital simbólico, sendo este conceito proposto por Pierre Bourdieu. Discorremos sobre como o espaço é produzido e (re)estruturado pelo e para o turismo, com o objetivo de atender às novas necessidades impostas pela atividade. Defendemos, ainda, que, no período contemporâneo, a exposição das práticas de turismo no âmbito das diversas redes sociais virtuais assume relevância como mecanismo para buscar ou atestar a distinção social.
