Abstract

O complexo estuarino-lagunar de Cananéia-Iguape é constituí­­do por um canal principal, além de rios e gamboas, sendo considerado o maior produtor de ostras (Crassostrea brasiliana Lamarck, 1818) em estoques naturais no litoral paulista. Com objetivo de estimar o estoque de ostras associado aos manguezais da região, foram estudados 18 rios e 10 gamboas no perí­­odo de outubro de 1999 a janeiro de 2000. Rios e gamboas foram percorridos da foz até as proximidades das nascentes, a fim de caracterizar estruturalmente os bosques de mangue e estimar o estoque de ostras. As ostras fixam-se, preferencialmente, sobre os rizóforos do mangue vermelho (Rhizophora mangle L.), nos primeiros 5 metros a partir da franja, incluindo as 1ª e 2ª fileiras de árvores junto í­Â s margens. Consideraram-se rios e gamboas produtivos em ostras aqueles que apresentaram bosques de mangue com predominí­¢ncia de R. mangle e os bosques mistos de R. mangle e Laguncularia racemosa (mangue branco). Verificou-se que, em direção í­Â cabeceira dos rios e gamboas, os bancos de ostras desaparecem paulatinamente, acompanhando o gradiente decrescente de salinidade. A estimativa de produção total dos rios e gamboas foi de 5.505.732 dúzias de ostras, sendo apenas 9,7% de tamanho comercial, correspondendo a 534.056 dúzias. Os manguezais dos rios e gamboas contribuem para a formação do estoque de ostras da região, devendo ser considerados quando se pretender elaborar planos de manejo sustentável de C. brasiliana naquele complexo estuarino-lagunar.
