Abstract

La provincia de Camagüey ha sufrido los efectos de la sequía con afectaciones en la rama agropecuaria por la pérdida del valor productivo del suelo dada las condiciones climáticas y antecedentes de su mal uso y manejo; esto hizo que la comunidad científica enfocara su atención en mejorar la captación de los recursos hídricos, lo que constituyó la base de este trabajo, cuyo objetivo fue mitigar los efectos de la sequía mediante el uso de coberturas naturales en el suelo y evitar o reducir la pérdida de su productividad. Se escogió un campo de plátano, para probar coberturas viva (vegetación espontánea) y muerta (mulch). El mulch se confeccionó con plantas de millo (Sorghum vulgare) y hojas de plátano (Musa Sp.). Se llevó el registro de las precipitaciones, la dinámica de la humedad con las coberturas, se calculó el índice de calidad inicial y final del suelo y los rendimientos del primer año. Se concluyó que el mulch es una excelente opción para mantener alta la humedad, elevar los rendimientos y mejorar la fertilidad del suelo y con ello la calidad y su capacidad productiva.
