The aim of this prospective study was to determinate the differences between endoscopic thyroid surgery (total or partial thyroidectomy) and conventional open thyroid surgery performed by the same surgical group. The objective is to collect a cohort of 200 patients with thyroid pathology candidates for surgical treatment, 100 managed by conventional open operation, and 100 by endoscopic technique. Between January and May 2003 we performed 10 thyroidectomies by the endoscopic technique and 8 by the open technique. Results so far reveal a relative advantage, still not statiscally significant, of the endoscopic method, as judged by postoperative pain, operative blood loss, and personal satisfaction with the cosmetic appearance, with a relative disavantage due to the operating time.
