Abstract

The paper analyzes the adjectival use of the present participle without the fi nal -i in the nominative and accusative masculine singular cases, when they are positioned as attributes and predicates. The aim of the paper is to examine reasons behind the increasingly frequent appearance of these shorter, non-standard forms in the language of media, as well as in the conversational speech and translated literature. Detected diff erences between the contemporary usage of present participle in adjectival form and middle 20th century’s usage are related to the morphosyntactic characteristics of this form and structural-semantic peculiarities of predicative position. These detected diff erences might suggest some innovations in diff erentiation of the form of the adjectivalized present participle in the modern Serbian language.
