At an early time point in the history of gynaecology and obstetrics, psychosomatic aspects became relevant in the development of etiological theories and the understanding of different conditions and diseases. The scientific discourse makes it apparent that this applies nowadays in a comparable intensity. In our work we discuss specific aspects of psychosomatic obstetrics and gynaecology and their association with basic medical research, chronic diseases and psychological constructs. Possible future prospects in regard of science and research require an intensified confrontation with basic medical research, including the use of functional imaging techniques and genetics for a profound understanding of psychosomatic phenomena in gynaecology. In this frame work interdisciplinary approaches and interconnectedness are not only desirable but essential and interlink aspects of immunology as a special part of physiology, functional imaging techniques in neurophysiology, psychology with opportunities of quantification and the phenomenon of epigenetics.
