: The article first presents the main characteristics of the Open Source Software model and the stages of its emergence and diffusion in the software industry. It then introduces to the special issue of the Revue d'Economie Industrielle devoted to the Economics of Open Source Software. It focuses on two important issues related to the current stage of development of the Open Source Software model: its long term viability and its specific ways to compete or interact with the proprietary model.
