<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec><jats:title>Background</jats:title><jats:p>Madariaga virus (MADV), has recently been associated with severe human disease in Panama, where the closely related Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) also circulates.
