Decomposition of some tree leaf litters in Chittagong evergreen forest soils under laboratory conditions

Abstract
Decomposition of some tree leaf litters in Chittagong evergreen forest soils was studied during July to October, 2005. Leaf litters viz. eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), garjan (Dipterocarpus turbinatus), gamar (Gmelina arborea) and jam (Syzygium cumini) were added @ 2 g 100 g-1 soil followed by incubation at room temperature for 90 days. Addition of leaf litters decreased soil acidity, the pH value went up to 6.0 in gamar amended soil. Among them, gamar had the highest decomposition rate and garjan the lowest rate. After three months incubation, 25, 23, 17 and 16% of the added carbon were decomposed in the gamar, eucalyptus, jam and gatjan amended soils, ...
