Friction and Wear Performance of Lifeboat Launch Slipways

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution provides a marine search and rescue service using\ud lifeboat stations sited along the coast of the UK and Ireland. In locations where there is no\ud natural harbour or where there is a large tidal range it is necessary to use an inclined\ud slipway to launch a large lifeboat. Lifeboat slipway stations consist of an initial section\ud where the boat is held on rollers followed by an inclined keelway of nickel/chromium coated\ud steel, the lifeboat is released from the top of the slipway and proceeds under its own weight\ud into the water.
