Marine biomineralising organisms provide a fundamental link between biology and global geochemical cycles, and retain an unparalleled record of past ocean conditions in the trace element and isotope chemistry of their shells. These ‘palaeoproxy’ tracers provide our main means of understanding past climate. This thesis considers aspects of biomineral formation, architecture and preservation, in the context of their use in as a source of palaeoproxies.
