Ammonium compounds in stratospheric aerosols

The circumstances under which morphological examination can provide a reliable guide to thecomposition of stratospheric particles are discussed. It is then shown that while stratosphericparticles often consist largely of sulfuric acid, there are occasions when ammoniated aerosols arepresent. This would be expected theoretically, for tropospheric-stratospheric air interchanges areknown to occur and must inject both ammoniated tropospheric aerosols and ammonia into thestratosphere.DOI: 10.1111/j.1600-0889.1986.tb00088.x
