The office of the International Polar Year has received more than 120Expressions of Interest letters from the health research field. It meansa wide variety of ideas and keen interest in international scientificcollaboration for the health of circumpolar populations and individuals. The activities for global networking have not been very prominentuntil now. The International Polar Year gives us an opportunityto find a new level of international collaboration in polar and circumpolarhealth research. The 13th International Congress on CircumpolarHealth in Novosibirsk, Russia to be held 12-16 June 2006, will be oneforum for this type of discussion. The success of international cooperationcalls for intensive preparation, an open mind and a commonwill. The preparation of a global, common circumpolar understandingin networking related to health issues also needs government support,e.g. in the frame of the Arctic Council and SCAR. Researchers andresearch organizations alone do not have enough resources to undertakethis preparation as part of their other duties. Hence, a special missionand resources allocated specially for this purpose are needed.International Journal of Circumpolar Health 65:1 2006
