Key decision makers (ministers or their representativesfrom the Arctic countries togetherwith representatives of the Permanent Participantsof Arctic Council) convened recently inNuuk, Greenland, to discuss a range of Arctichealth issues. As a result of this meeting, anArctic Health Declaration has been signed andwill set a framework for the research and developmentof Arctic health for years to come. Arcticcountries intend to strengthen their collaborationin health promotion, disease surveillanceand culturally appropriate health care delivery;increase their sharing of knowledge regardingcommon health opportunities and challenges;continue to empower Indigenous peoples andother Arctic residents through health promotionand disease prevention; enhance mental healthand increase the prevention of substance abuseand suicides; extend the use of ehealth applications;continue efforts to improve and sustainlong-term observation, monitoring and surveillanceof diseases; and increase their cooperationto mitigate and adapt to the effects of environmentand climate change on Arctic health.International Journal of Circumpolar Health 70:1 2011
