The creation of intellectual capital of a country largely depends on the robustness of its education sector in general and higher education and research output in particular. Trends emerging in the Indian industry also indicate the important contribution of doctoral education to the country, the industry as well as the academia. One of the main objectives of doctoral education is to prepare intellectual leaders who will do the groundwork to create new paradigms and products for tomorrow. Thus, it needs to provide deeper experience in the values, norms, and practices of the chosen profession while also developing the skills, tools, and habits of inquiry within a discipline. Hence, studying the trends in doctoral education will give important insights into the knowledge and intellectual capital of the state and the country.
At a time when Gujarat is envisaged to contribute significantly to the knowledge capital of the country, the role of its higher education system in transforming the state cannot be understated. Gujarats literacy rate of 79%, which is above the national average of 74%, speaks about the noteworthy reforms in education that the state has undergone in the last decade.
This research paper focusses on the trends in doctoral education that Gujarat has witnessed during the period 2001-2012.
