Prof. Deatons seminal book The Great Escape, winning him a Nobel Prize in Economics this year, has triggered off a debate on what needs to be done to fight the scourge of HDI deficit & bring up those who are Below Poverty Line (BPL) and preempt politics of aid, which has serious undercurrents for Less Developed Countries (LDCs). The role of institutions to reach out aid to the donee, rather than being dictated by donors and global inequality eluding solution have been beautifully brought out in the book. The article attempts to etch out Indias experience in this regard with specific reference to the education sector. The dissonance between GDP growth and HDI, low attainment in Mean Years of Schooling (MYS), poor record in terms of research publications and patents, inadequate attention to Skill India have put Indias growth story on a slippery path. The paper also draws attention to factors like respect for contrarian viewpoints, abdication of religious jingoism through a strong political consensus on fundamental democratic and liberal values.
