Abstract

The article is devoted to studying of the origins of Indo-Iranian cult of sacred drink Soma/Haoma, which is reflected in the ancient written monuments of the Indo-Iranian peoples - the «Rigveda» and«Avesta». The origins of the cult go away in ancient times, during the existence of the Indo-Iranian language community. According to some researchers, the period of the Indo-Iranian unity comes at a time of existence of Sintashta type sites. In the graves of warriors-charioteers found items which the researchers interpret as the crushing stones for making Soma. On the basis of analysis of the texts «Rigveda», the author concludes that the sacred drink was used by warriors during rituals associated with the chariot race, as a means that giving rush of physical forces and the victory in competitions. The most likely candidate for the role Soma seems ephedra.
