Protein coding and non-coding RNA can spread between cells and tissues of an organism. RNA mobility between organisms has been documented within and among different kingdoms of life including fungi, plants and animals. However, the underlying mechanisms and roles of such transmissible RNA are poorly understood. Our recent studies demonstrated that honeybees share biologically active RNA among members of the hive through secretion and ingestion of worker and royal jellies.
