Description
The aim of this funding bid is to undertake significant archival research relating to London County Council (LCC) and its Asylums Committee. The LCC assumed responsibility for the Middlesex and Surrey County Asylums following the introduction of the Local Government Act in 1888. In the 1890s and 1900s it built new large institutions at Epsom in a bid to manage demand from the capital for more accommodation for the insane. Despite being the country's foremost provider of institutional provision, both the LCC and its impact on mental health policy have been largely overlooked by historians.
