In biomedical science, there is a growing realisation that the mechanisms of ageing underlie many major debilitating age-related diseases. Interventions in the ageing process therefore have the potential to make an immense impact on our healthspan. The most potent of these interventions is dietary restriction (DR) – decreasing dietary intake but avoiding malnutrition. Translation of DR to humans is impeded by our lack of knowledge on exact mechanisms and the optimal diet. DR is thought to result from a reduced intake of the macronutrient protein.
