Forgotten philosophers: Erika Sehl and Kurt Stavenhagen at the Herder Institute in Riga and in the World

Description

Since the 90s of the 20th century, it has been possible to reintegrate many processes and personalities from the 20s-30s into the space of Latvian cultural memory which have been important both in the context of Latvia and the region, and also on a global scale - in sciences, philosophy and art. However, this work of reintegration is far from over. This can be said by looking at intellectuals of German-Baltic origin, who made up a significant part of the intellectual potential of Latvia at that time in the sciences and culture. The Herder Institute in Riga (1921-1939) was an institution that during its existence not only invited to Riga the most prominent representatives of science of that time (Max Planck, Alfred Wegener etc.), but also was able to qualitatively develop local resources. This has not been possible without outstanding educators in the field of higher education. Kurt Stavenhagen is one of them. The life of his student Erika Sehl is an excellent example of the constellation of scientific discoveries and philosophical discussions, the era and the path of a woman-scientist in the sciences. Today, unfortunately, we know almost nothing about her - only that she studied with the most prominent philosophers of her time, worked in the field of academic education, is author of philosophical works.
