Abstract

WiFi 7 on uusin markkinoille julkaistava WiFi standardi, joka lupaa sekä suuremman kaistanleveyden että merkittävästi pienemmät viiveajat. Nämä standardit eivät kuitenkaan määritä laitteiden tarkkaa toimintaa, joten markkinoille julkaistavissa laitteissa voi olla toiminnallisesti suuriakin eroja. Tässä työssä esitellään ohjelmistokehityksen sovelluksista createch ja suoratoisto sekä arvioidaan WiFi 7 laitteiden vaikutuksia kyseisten sovellusalueiden toimintaan. Työssä esitellään myös tutkimushetkellä markkinoilla olevien WiFi 7 laitteiden ominaisuuksia sekä arvioidaan niiden käyttöönoton kannattavuutta. Arvioinnin tukena käytetään laitteiden myyntihintaan suhteutettua kaistanleveyttä. Laitekohtaisessa arvioinnissa todettiin, että älypuhelimia lukuun ottamatta WiFi 7 laitteiden käyttöönotto on tutkimushetkellä kannattavaa. Eniten hyötyä WiFi 7 laitteista on henkilöille, joiden käyttökohteet vaativat reaalitaikaisuutta. Ohjelmistokehityksen sovelluksista erityisesti createch hyötyy WiFi 7 laitteista, koska se hyödyntää paljon VR-teknologiaa. WiFi 7 laitteiden merkitys tulee olemaan suuri myös tulevaisuudessa korkeamman kuvanlaadun sekä interaktiivisten sisältöjen yleistymisen seurauksena.

WiFi 7 is the newest available WiFi standard, which promises larger bandwidth and lower latency than its predecessors. These standards do not strictly determine the attributes of a device, thus there can be a lot of performance differences between the devices released to the market. This work aims to evaluate the viability of currently available WiFi 7 devices and assess the effect of those devices on different applications of software engineering. To help with the evaluation, the device’s maximum bandwidth proportional to the sales price is calculated for each device. As a result of this work, it is determined that WiFi 7 devices, excluding smartphones, are viable at the time of this research. WiFi 7 devices are the most beneficial to users who regularly use real-time applications. Out of the software development applications reviewed in this work, createch benefited the most due to the high usage of VR technology. The importance of WiFi 7 devices is expected to grow as larger screen resolutions and interactive content become more common.
