Cette notice en quatre parties s’insère dans le catalogue de l’exposition consacrée à Pierre l’Arétin (Pietro Aretino, 1492-1556) et organisée au musée des Offices de Florence (26 novembre 2019-1er mars 2020). À travers peintures, sculptures, objets d’art, miniatures, livres imprimés, l’exposition a offert le portrait à multiples facettes de cet intellectuel, acteur de premier plan sur la scène diplomatique du XVIe siècle. Le catalogue, rédigé par une cinquantaine de spécialistes en lettres et en histoire de l’art, restitue le rayonnement d’un écrivain, qui ne fut pas qu’un satiriste de grand renom et un auteur licencieux, mais illustra les lettres dans les registres autant grave que parodique et entretint un dialogue fertile avec les représentants de la « manière moderne » dont il fut un témoin et un promoteur important. La notice, qui accompagne l’exposition d’exemplaires d’éditions du XVIe siècle des œuvres bibliques de l’auteur, rend compte des rapports entre réécriture biblique et peinture religieuse dans le choix des sujets, de la composition et du style.
