For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.euOpen Access Mandate for Publications assignment_turned_in Project ISEP/IPPFunder: FCT Project Code: UID/CEC/04234/2013Funder Contribution: 777,961 EURThe CISTER Research Unit focuses its activity in the analysis, design and implementation of real-time and embedded computing systems. Real-time systems are those systems in which correctness depends both on the logical result of the computations and on the time at which the results are produced. Unlike other information and communication systems, in real-time computing correctness and performance are tightly interrelated. Decades ago, real-time systems were an important but narrow niche of computing, consisting mainly of military, air traffic control and embedded systems for manufacturing and process control. This association to specific applications accounted for the low interested in the scientific community. The emergence of large scale distributed systems and the pervasiveness of computing devices in our daily lives have broadened real-time concerns into a mainstream enterprise, with clients in a wide variety of industries and academic disciplines. Real-time systems are nowadays everywhere, built into vehicles, roads, bridges and tunnels, medical instruments and surgical robots, homes, offices and factories, aeroplanes and airports, electronic games and PDAs, mobile phones and communication and even into virtual reality glasses, and our clothes. They can be interconnected in large heterogeneous networks: vehicles connect to the fixed road infrastructure, smart cards connect to the banking system, sensor nodes connected to power-grids or energy-efficient districts, etc. It is not far-fetched to state that such systems are the nervous system of modern society, seamlessly interacting with the physical environment, and it is no coincidence that they appear always when a smart environment is put forward. Due to their ubiquity and relevance in all relevant market sectors www.artemis-ju.eu, real-time embedded computing has been established as a priority for commercial strategy and academic research for the foreseeable future, and is one of the strategic research and innovation areas in Europe, with impact in many influent sectors such as industrial automation, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, communication systems and medical systems. Many of these are sectors where Europe is a world-wide reference, contrarily to general-purpose computing systems, traditionally dominated by non-European organizations cordis.europa.eu/ist/embedded/. And this is one of the areas witnessing high growth in Information and Communication Technologies ICT, a market valued 121 billion USD in 2011 and expected to grow to 194 billion USD by 2018 http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/embedded-system.html. This is the context and vision in which CISTER is working. The strategy adopted by the Unit is to develop research in this area, benchmarked against the best international groups. These include not only the most prestigious research groups in Europe as well as a large number of research groups in the U.S. To achieve this, four key strategic options have been driving the research agenda of the Unit: i sustained growing and research focus; ii selective and demanding publication efforts; iii selective, demanding and consistent participation of key Unit’s researchers in scientific service; iv a strong participation in international reputed academic/industrial research partnerships with focus both on fundamental and applied research. More recently, a new dimension has been included to tackle the greater efforts into higher technology readiness levels, thus leading to v increased technology transfer of research results. For that, the unit has also procured for a strategic alliance with the larger INESC-TEC Associated Laboratory to collaborate with other units in complementary topics, and/or in different stages of the knowledge-to-value chain. The goal of the unit is to continue and reinforce its role as one of the leaders of world research in real-time and embedded computing systems. The general objectives need to be aligned with the growing strategic importance of embedded systems in Europe, and the role that needs to be played in the international research landscape of the area. For that, the unit will foster its plan on developing both cutting-edge research including PhD and MSc research works and also drawing the cutting-edge results obtained into applied research driven in the framework of international academic/industrial partnerships. Future research activities of the unit will build upon the relevant experience gained and key competences, and will strategically explore existent and emerging topics of research. Having a strong academic background and scientific track record, the unit will maintain the research focus and selective and demanding scientific efforts. The foreseen activities will be also supported by the outcomes of the several research projects which the unit has ongoing, starting or proposed, considering both fundamental research projects, and industry/academia partnerships. In order to achieve this, there are four key objectives that the unit will pursue in this timeframe: OBJECTIVE 1 – Deliver world-class research results in key topics that are emerging in the domains of embedded real-time computing systems OBJECTIVE 2 - Apply the research results in application domains which can enable societal changes, as it is becoming more and more the focus of the European R&D landscape; OBJECTIVE 3 - Sustain an advanced graduation program in the area of real-time and embedded systems; and OBJECTIVE 4 – Transfer and exploit the results of CISTER research.
