The similarities and dissimilarities in the optical and related properties of conventional (e.g. CdS) and unconventional (i.e. metal-halide chain complexes, organic ion radical salts, polymers etc) semiconductors (bulk and small particles) are reviewed and some recent results are briefly re ported. The blue shift of the excitonic or charge transfer bands, by decreasing the size of the particles, is a common feature in the spectra of this kind of materials.
