Following D6.2 - SSHOC Community Engagement Strategy and building upon it, the SSHOC project has created this Building Expertise Strategy. It describes an initial plan for the project’s activities and tools to be used in order to build expertise among user communities. Moreover, it provides a framework for SSHOC training activities that aim to empower the SSHOC network to a greater level of expertise in Open Science for SSH, utilizing SSHOC services, tools and data throughout the research lifecycle and according to the FAIR Principles. In this sense, in collaboration and coordination, when possible and appropriate, with raising awareness activities, SSHOC is building its plan around three major tasks and certain types of activities: i) empowering users through existing and new training materials and online learning paths, ii) building expertise through the SSHOC Training Network and related tools (the SSHOC Train-the-trainer Toolkit, a recommended trainer directory, etc.) and activities (SSHOC train-the-trainer bootcamps, supporting training organizations in delivering national-level train-the-trainer workshops, identification of regional nodes, etc.) and iii) coordinating targeted training in the Social Sciences and Humanities, with the aim of developing a data-sharing culture following the FAIR principles. Through building expertise and empowering its network, SSHOC aims to provide its community with the necessary knowledge, skills, and expertise required to appropriately, effectively, and efficiently use and contribute to the SSHOC resources - both from disciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives. In this first phase of the project, we identified the major actors and audiences to be targeted, taking into account that (due to the nature of the project) the majority of the community is involved in SSHOC. At the same time, we identified, contextualized and (in many cases) established contact with training activities relevant for the project, especially in the cases where project partners either participate in these initiatives as partners or as experts/external actors, thus leveraging existing connections. Gaps and initiatives belonging to this category have been identified as well. In the course of the project, collaboration, coordination and/or co- location of activities will be established. As the activities under WP6 - Fostering Communities, Empowering Users and Building Expertise run horizontally in the project, a procedure has been set up to spread training activities across the project. This procedure accounts for geographic and disciplinary distribution, as well as expertise levels and training needs of the audience, available resources and activities of other WPs (WP3, WP4, WP5, WP8 and WP9 in particular), in order to set KPIs. The general format of activities has been agreed, with flexibility allowed in terms of formatting each training activity as this will allow WPs to adapt to specific training needs and current developments.

International audience

This paper describes a corpus of about 3,000 English literary texts with about 250 million words extracted from the Gutenberg project that span a range of genres from both fiction and non-fiction written by more than 130 authors (e.g., Darwin, Dickens, Shakespeare). Quantitative narrative analysis (QNA) is used to explore a cleaned subcorpus, the Gutenberg English Poetry Corpus (GEPC), which comprises over 100 poetic texts with around two million words from about 50 authors (e.g., Keats, Joyce, Wordsworth). Some exemplary QNA studies show author similarities based on latent semantic analysis, significant topics for each author or various text-analytic metrics for George Eliot’s poem “How Lisa Loved the King” and James Joyce’s “Chamber Music,” concerning, e.g., lexical diversity or sentiment analysis. The GEPC is particularly suited for research in Digital Humanities, Computational Stylistics, or Neurocognitive Poetics, e.g., as training and test corpus for stimulus development and control in empirical studies.

The study and preservation of tangible cultural and natural heritage is a global challenge for science and society at large. The European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS) will play a leading role in research on the interpretation, preservation, documentation and management of heritage. As an interdisciplinary infrastructure, E-RIHS will interconnect knowledge and methodologies to address key scientific questions in the field of heritage as a whole. The infrastructure is built on ten core pillars. It will provide a structured and unified input of large-scale instruments, portable devices, physical and digital archives. Its implementation will focus on scientific excellence, interdisciplinarity and cooperation. In doing so, it will offer unprecedented research opportunities to a wide range of interdisciplinary scientific communities.

For planning further activities in WP6 - Fostering Communities, Empowering Users, & Building Expertise as well as input for the development of the SSH Open Marketplace in WP7- Creating the SSH Open Marketplace it is indispensable to survey the current landscape of existing training materials in the SSH cluster as well as in the broader context of EOSC. Numerous similar activities have been performed in various recent EOSC- and FAIR- related projects and these have served as partial input while compiling this inventory. Around 30 sources of training material of various kinds and scopes have been gathered initially. These were analysed along with a number of dimensions, like intended audience, relevant discipline, topics covered, extent, status etc. Additionally, for most of the sources, a few individual training material items were picked and described in further detail. All this information has been collected through a dedicated Drupal-based application. The collected information is not exhausting, but it should provide a sufficient probe into the training materials landscape to inform further actions. Particularly it reveals the following findings: There seems to be a host of material on Research Data Management and application of FAIR principles, as well as on basic scripting skills for Data Science, i.e. working with the shell, programming with Python/R, for purposes of automatically processing data. We can distinguish four types of training materials: e-learning courses, carpentry-style, blog-style, static (slides, videos, PDFs) There are numerous sources that seem to be abandoned or in danger of becoming obsolete. There is little to none harmonisation with respect to metadata about the training material. This information is seldom available in structured and automatically harvestable form. The findings imply the following recommendations for further work in WP6 and WP7: Perform a gap analysis on the topic coverage combined with the set of topics which could be provided by the individual WPs of the project Reserve sufficient capacities for the manual curation of existing sources, defining metadata and communicating with the providers. Start as soon as possible.

This white-paper expresses common requirements of Research Communities seeking to leverage Identity Federation for Authentication and Authorisation. Recommendations are made to Stakeholders to guide the future evolution of Federated Identity Management in a direction that better satisfies research use cases. The authors represent research communities, Research Services, Infrastructures, Identity Federations and Interfederations, with a joint motivation to ease collaboration for distributed researchers. The content has been edited collaboratively by the Federated Identity Management for Research (FIM4R) Community, with input sought at conferences and meetings in Europe, Asia and North America.

One of the main goals of the PARTHENOS project (Pooling Activities, Resources and Tools for Heritage E-research Networking, Optimization and Synergies - EC-H2020-RIA grant agreement 654119) is to bridge existing DHIs by forming a federation where researchers of different sectors of the Humanities can collaborate, share data, services and tools in an integrated environment. PARTHENOS will produce a complete technical framework for the federation, enabling transparent access to resources managed by different DHIs and enabling the creation and operation of Virtual Research Environments where researchers with different backgrounds can collaborate on specific research topics.

This project aims to build a Social Sciences and Humanities Open Cloud (SSHOC) as part of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by implementing a cloud based-infrastructure to maximize the interconnectedness of existing and new research infrastructures. The goal is to provide a recognisable and accessible environment for data, tools, services and trainings, and to maximise data reuse through Open Science and FAIR principles. As stated in the Grant Agreement Article 38.1, “the beneficiaries must promote the action and its results, by providing targeted information to multiple audiences (including the media and the public) in a strategic and 1 effective manner“ . In line with this, this document sets out a strategy for communication, and additionally for dissemination. Both, communication activities as well as dissemination activities contribute fundamentally to the project’s visibility, outreach, and impact. This document will provide guidance to the projects’ partners in order to make the most of their activities. This strategy document outlines the main objectives, target groups, tools, and activities for communication and dissemination of the SSHOC. 2 . activities addresses the concepts of inserting research results in the specific policy context in which they are implemented. The approach also aligns with best practices and results of other EOSC implementation projects. This adheres to the goals set out by the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas, who sets out three major points for the EU research and innovation policy, which are summarised as “Open Innovation, Open Science and Open to the World” The SSHOC communication strategy is a SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) and KPI-driven approach to successful community building and stakeholder engagement, design and promotion of the Marketplace, content creation and development of the Communication Toolbox, and social media campaigns. Moreover, experience has demonstrated, amongst many things, that the most important dissemination recommendations and actions should be Realistic, Implementable, Achievable and Measurable. It ensures extensive interactions between and with ERICs and SSH ESFRI Landmarks, open source communities, policy makers as well as private and industry players active in the pilot domains of Social Science and Economics, Migration & Mobility, Election Studies, Language & Humanities, Culture and Heritage, with content tailored to different professional roles and research cultures. The strategy also aims to support the project policy approach towards the EOSC, showcasing collaboration success stories and topics of common interest, and a go-to plan for the project main sustainable asset, the SSH Open Marketplace.

The paper presents a journey, which starts from various social sciences and humanities (SSH) Research Infrastructures in Europe and arrives at the comprehensive "ecosystem of infrastructures", namely the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). We will highlight how the SSH Open Science infrastructures contribute to the goal of establishing the EOSC. First, through the example of OPERAS, the European Research Infrastructure for Open Scholarly Communication in the SSH, to see how its services are conceived to be part of the EOSC and to address the communities' needs. The next two sections highlight collaboration practices between partners in Europe to build the SSH component of the EOSC and a SSH discovery platform, as a service of OPERAS and the EOSC. The last two sections will focus on an implementation network dedicated to SSH data fairification. The paper was written as part of the TRIPLE project (https://www.gotriple.eu/), which is financed under the Horizon 2020 framework (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/863420) with approx. 5.6 million Euros for a duration of 42 months (2019-2023). At the heart of the project is the development of the TRIPLE platform, an innovative multilingual and multicultural discovery solution.

Within task 5.2 of the SSHOC project, repository software is being developed based on Dataverse, for the sharing and publication of research data within the Social Science and Humanities (SSH) domain. Dataverse is an open-source research data repository software developed by the Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS), Harvard University. More and more developers from the Dataverse community improve the software together with Harvard. Within task 5.2 of the SSHOC project, a group of developers and research data specialists is working on functionalities to make the Dataverse repository software more compliant to the needs of the European SSH community. This document reports on the status of the developed functionalities.
