    This book is a collection of seventeen papers which describe the impact that the ARIADNE project and its successor, ARIADNEplus (2019-2022) have had on the archaeological community, both in Europe and further afield. Each case study has been contributed by organisations involved in the ARIADNE Infrastructure who cover many countries from across Europe as well as Argentina and Japan. These papers were originally presented at the CAA Conference in Krakow, April 2019 and cover aspects such as data management, application of standards and guidelines, the use of CIDOC-CRM and Open Data to name but a few.

    The European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) portal website aims to aggregate digitally available archival descriptions concerning the Holocaust. This portal is actually a meta-catalogue, or an information aggregator, whose biggest goal is to have up-to-date information by means of building sustainable data pipelines between EHRI and its content providers. Just like in similar archival information aggregators (e.g. Archives Portal Europe or Monasterium), the XML-based metadata standard Encoded Archival Description (EAD) plays a key role. The article presents how EADs are imported into the portal, mainly thanks to the Open Archive Initiative protocols.

    One of the main products of the Humanities at Scale project was a profound (re)-conceptualisation of the DARIAH in-kinds and a web-based service [2] to collect, review and display in-kind contributions, in short DARIAH contributions. [1] This paper looks at the results of the implementation phase of this new service, and particularly focuses on baseline statistics and visual analytics of the content submitted (about 300 contributions for 2017 and 2018). In general, for European Research Infrastructures, so-called in-kind contributions are a way for the members to account for their national eorts under the umbrella of the ERIC. They may represent contributions available for all ERIC members (e.g., central services executed by an institution in a member country) and/or contributions which embody, complement, or enhance the mission and strategic actions of an ERIC on the national level. DARIAH's reference model [1] on the basis of which contributions are dened, introduces two main categories: `services' and `activities'. For them a detailed metadata scheme has been devised. Submitted contributions are further subject to a detailed self-assessment and reviewing process, one part of which is dedicated to determine those contributions which are put up for the financial accountability of a member's contributions. The web-based service replaces earlier forms of template-based and data-based submission of in-kinds, and enables immediate comparison of the submissions - also by a couple of visual interfaces (map, tables). In this paper, we aim to demonstrate the main benets of the tool and zoom into three aspects. The DARIAH contribution tool relies on the tedious and comprehensive work of the National Coordinators which are in charge of the submission process. To make their often invisible work more visible is one motivation behind this paper. The submitted content as such forms an interesting empirical base for reflection on what is seen as a DARIAH contribution by the DARIAH community. This, in turn, can inform the DARIAH strategy and help to monitor the success of its actions. This is the second motivation. Submissions can still vary in form greatly, despite the formal model. They remain human generated content. Analysing the variety helps to tune the tool to user requirements, to fix bugs, and to curate the data it collects. We conclude our paper with reflections on the future use of the tool and its connection to other DARIAH strategic actions, as designed in the Strategic Action Plan II.

    Among the goals of the ARIADNE project (a digital infrastructure for archaeological documentation), two interrelated objectives are the design of new services (or the integration of existing ones) and the implementation of an intense training & hands-on program. Especially in the case of visual media (which are evolving at an impressing pace) services should be paired by user consultation and training, since a pre-requisite of any service activity is to consolidate knowledge on the potential of new media and the impact those could have in the selected discipline. The latter is the main objective of the TNA training program and of other user consultation events that have been organized in the first 18 months of the ARIADNE project. This short contribution presents the results of this activity and our plans for the design of new services.

    The Media Suite is one of the components of the Dutch research infrastructure CLARIAH , which aims to serve the needs of media scholars, or digital humanists in general, by providing access to large audiovisual collections, that are distributed across various content providers, and their contextual data. The goal is to provide a user-friendly infrastructure, with applications to work with that data in a variety of scholarly projects. This infrastructure consists of multiple data sets and tools, it is accessible via a web-portal and is tailored to the needs of specific scholarly uses. It serves the needs for working with audiovisual data collections and related mixed-media contextual sources that are maintained by cultural heritage institutions and knowledge institutions such as The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, EYE Film Institute of the Netherlands and the National Library of The Netherlands (KB).

    International audience; This paper describes the workflow of the Grammateus project, from gathering data on Greek documentary papyri to the creation of a web application. The first stage is the selection of a corpus and the choice of metadata to record: papyrology specialists gather data from printed editions, existing online resources and digital facsimiles. In the next step, this data is transformed into the EpiDoc standard of XML TEI encoding, to facilitate its reuse by others, and processed for HTML display. We also reuse existing text transcriptions available on . Since these transcriptions may be regularly updated by the scholarly community, we aim to access them dynamically. Although the transcriptions follow the EpiDoc guidelines, the wide diversity of the papyri as well as small inconsistencies in encoding make data reuse challenging. Currently, our data is available on an institutional GitLab repository, and we will archive our final dataset according to the FAIR principles.

    One of the funded project proposals under DARIAH’s Open Humanities call 2015 was “Open History: Sustainable digital publishing of archival catalogues of twentieth-century history archives”. Based on the experiences of the Collaborative EuropeaN Digital Archival Research Infrastructure (CENDARI) and the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI), the main goal of the “Open History” project was to enhance the dialogue between (meta-)data providers and research infrastructures. Integrating archival descriptions – when they were already available – held at a wide variety of twentieth-century history archives (from classic archives to memorial sites, libraries and private archives) into research infrastructures has proven to be a major challenge, which could not be done without some degree of limited to extensive pre-processing or other preparatory work. The “Open History” project organized two workshops and developed two tools: an easily accessible and general article on why the practice of standardization and sharing is important and how this can be achieved; and a model which provides checklists for self-analyses of archival institutions. The text that follows is the article we have developed. It intentionally remains at a general level, without much jargon, so that it can be easily read by those who are non-archivists or non-IT. Hence, we hope it will be easy to understand for both those who are describing the sources at various archives (with or without IT or archival sciences degrees), as well as decision-makers (directors and advisory boards) who wish to understand the benefits of investing in standardization and sharing of data. It is important to note is that this text is a first step, not a static, final result. Not all aspects about standardization and publication of (meta-)data are discussed, nor are updates or feedback mechanisms for annotations and comments discussed. The idea is that this text can be used in full or in part and that it will include further chapters and section updates as time goes by and as other communities begin using it.     The Media Suite is one of the components of the Dutch research infrastructure CLARIAH , which aims to serve the needs of media scholars, or digital humanists in general, by providing access to large audiovisual collections, that are distributed across various content providers, and their contextual data. The goal is to provide a user-friendly infrastructure, with applications to work with that data in a variety of scholarly projects. This infrastructure consists of multiple data sets and tools, it is accessible via a web-portal and is tailored to the needs of specific scholarly uses. It serves the needs for working with audiovisual data collections and related mixed-media contextual sources that are maintained by cultural heritage institutions and knowledge institutions such as The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, EYE Film Institute of the Netherlands and the National Library of The Netherlands (KB).

    One of the main products of the Humanities at Scale project was a profound (re)-conceptualisation of the DARIAH in-kinds and a web-based service [2] to collect, review and display in-kind contributions, in short DARIAH contributions. [1] This paper looks at the results of the implementation phase of this new service, and particularly focuses on baseline statistics and visual analytics of the content submitted (about 300 contributions for 2017 and 2018). In general, for European Research Infrastructures, so-called in-kind contributions are a way for the members to account for their national eorts under the umbrella of the ERIC. They may represent contributions available for all ERIC members (e.g., central services executed by an institution in a member country) and/or contributions which embody, complement, or enhance the mission and strategic actions of an ERIC on the national level. DARIAH's reference model [1] on the basis of which contributions are dened, introduces two main categories: `services' and `activities'. For them a detailed metadata scheme has been devised. Submitted contributions are further subject to a detailed self-assessment and reviewing process, one part of which is dedicated to determine those contributions which are put up for the financial accountability of a member's contributions. The web-based service replaces earlier forms of template-based and data-based submission of in-kinds, and enables immediate comparison of the submissions - also by a couple of visual interfaces (map, tables). In this paper, we aim to demonstrate the main benets of the tool and zoom into three aspects. The DARIAH contribution tool relies on the tedious and comprehensive work of the National Coordinators which are in charge of the submission process. To make their often invisible work more visible is one motivation behind this paper. The submitted content as such forms an interesting empirical base for reflection on what is seen as a DARIAH contribution by the DARIAH community. This, in turn, can inform the DARIAH strategy and help to monitor the success of its actions. This is the second motivation. Submissions can still vary in form greatly, despite the formal model. They remain human generated content. Analysing the variety helps to tune the tool to user requirements, to fix bugs, and to curate the data it collects. We conclude our paper with reflections on the future use of the tool and its connection to other DARIAH strategic actions, as designed in the Strategic Action Plan II.

    This book is a collection of seventeen papers which describe the impact that the ARIADNE project and its successor, ARIADNEplus (2019-2022) have had on the archaeological community, both in Europe and further afield. Each case study has been contributed by organisations involved in the ARIADNE Infrastructure who cover many countries from across Europe as well as Argentina and Japan. These papers were originally presented at the CAA Conference in Krakow, April 2019 and cover aspects such as data management, application of standards and guidelines, the use of CIDOC-CRM and Open Data to name but a few.

    The European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) portal website aims to aggregate digitally available archival descriptions concerning the Holocaust. This portal is actually a meta-catalogue, or an information aggregator, whose biggest goal is to have up-to-date information by means of building sustainable data pipelines between EHRI and its content providers. Just like in similar archival information aggregators (e.g. Archives Portal Europe or Monasterium), the XML-based metadata standard Encoded Archival Description (EAD) plays a key role. The article presents how EADs are imported into the portal, mainly thanks to the Open Archive Initiative protocols.

    Among the goals of the ARIADNE project (a digital infrastructure for archaeological documentation), two interrelated objectives are the design of new services (or the integration of existing ones) and the implementation of an intense training & hands-on program. Especially in the case of visual media (which are evolving at an impressing pace) services should be paired by user consultation and training, since a pre-requisite of any service activity is to consolidate knowledge on the potential of new media and the impact those could have in the selected discipline. The latter is the main objective of the TNA training program and of other user consultation events that have been organized in the first 18 months of the ARIADNE project. This short contribution presents the results of this activity and our plans for the design of new services.

    The Media Suite is one of the components of the Dutch research infrastructure CLARIAH , which aims to serve the needs of media scholars, or digital humanists in general, by providing access to large audiovisual collections, that are distributed across various content providers, and their contextual data. The goal is to provide a user-friendly infrastructure, with applications to work with that data in a variety of scholarly projects. This infrastructure consists of multiple data sets and tools, it is accessible via a web-portal and is tailored to the needs of specific scholarly uses. It serves the needs for working with audiovisual data collections and related mixed-media contextual sources that are maintained by cultural heritage institutions and knowledge institutions such as The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, EYE Film Institute of the Netherlands and the National Library of The Netherlands (KB).

    International audience; This paper describes the workflow of the Grammateus project, from gathering data on Greek documentary papyri to the creation of a web application. The first stage is the selection of a corpus and the choice of metadata to record: papyrology specialists gather data from printed editions, existing online resources and digital facsimiles. In the next step, this data is transformed into the EpiDoc standard of XML TEI encoding, to facilitate its reuse by others, and processed for HTML display. We also reuse existing text transcriptions available on . Since these transcriptions may be regularly updated by the scholarly community, we aim to access them dynamically. Although the transcriptions follow the EpiDoc guidelines, the wide diversity of the papyri as well as small inconsistencies in encoding make data reuse challenging. Currently, our data is available on an institutional GitLab repository, and we will archive our final dataset according to the FAIR principles.

    One of the funded project proposals under DARIAH’s Open Humanities call 2015 was “Open History: Sustainable digital publishing of archival catalogues of twentieth-century history archives”. Based on the experiences of the Collaborative EuropeaN Digital Archival Research Infrastructure (CENDARI) and the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI), the main goal of the “Open History” project was to enhance the dialogue between (meta-)data providers and research infrastructures. Integrating archival descriptions – when they were already available – held at a wide variety of twentieth-century history archives (from classic archives to memorial sites, libraries and private archives) into research infrastructures has proven to be a major challenge, which could not be done without some degree of limited to extensive pre-processing or other preparatory work. The “Open History” project organized two workshops and developed two tools: an easily accessible and general article on why the practice of standardization and sharing is important and how this can be achieved; and a model which provides checklists for self-analyses of archival institutions. The text that follows is the article we have developed. It intentionally remains at a general level, without much jargon, so that it can be easily read by those who are non-archivists or non-IT. Hence, we hope it will be easy to understand for both those who are describing the sources at various archives (with or without IT or archival sciences degrees), as well as decision-makers (directors and advisory boards) who wish to understand the benefits of investing in standardization and sharing of data. It is important to note is that this text is a first step, not a static, final result. Not all aspects about standardization and publication of (meta-)data are discussed, nor are updates or feedback mechanisms for annotations and comments discussed. The idea is that this text can be used in full or in part and that it will include further chapters and section updates as time goes by and as other communities begin using it. Some archives will read through much of these and see confirmation of what they have already been implementing; others – especially the smaller institutions, such as private memory institutions – will find this a low-key and hands-on introduction to help them in their efforts.
