    International audience; The High Level Trigger (HLT) of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider receives events which pass the LVL1 trigger at ~75 kHz and has to reduce the rate to ~200 Hz while retaining the most interesting physics. It is a software trigger and performs the reduction in two stages: the LVL2 trigger and the Event Filter (EF). At the heart of the HLT is the Steering software. To minimise processing time and data transfers it implements the novel event selection strategies of seeded, step-wise reconstruction and early rejection. The HLT is seeded by regions of interest identified at LVL1. These and the static configuration determine which algorithms are run to reconstruct event data and test the validity of trigger signatures. The decision to reject the event or continue is based on the valid signatures, taking into account pre-scale and pass-through. After the EF, event classification tags are assigned for streaming purposes. Several powerful new features for commissioning and operation have been added: comprehensive monitoring is now built in to the framework; for validation and debugging, reconstructed data can be written out; the steering is integrated with the new configuration (presented separately), and topological and global triggers have been added. This paper will present details of the final design and its implementation, the principles behind it, and the requirements and constraints it is subject to. The experience gained from technical runs with realistic trigger menus will be described.

    International audience; This essay examines the geographic origins, the political belongings and the confessional profiles of the members of the two most important mercantile nations of eighteenth-century southern Italy: the French nation and the British factory of Naples. Taking into account their pronounced prosopographic heterogeneity, it shows how legal resources and their social uses played a crucial role in defining the boundaries of such groups.

    from International Workshop on Multimedia for Cultural Heritage : MM4CH 2011 Multimedia for Cultural Heritage; International audience; This paper shows how to improve the results of a 3D scanning system to allow to better fit the requirements of the Multi-Media and Cultural Heritage domains. A real-time in-hand scanning system is enhanced by further processing its intermediate data, with the goal of producing a digital 3D model with a high quality color texture and an improved representation of the high-frequency shape detail. The proposed solution starts from the usual output of the scanner, a 3D model and a video sequence gathered by the scanner sensor, for which the rigid motion is known at each frame. The produced color texture is deprived of the typical artifacts that generally appear while creating textures from several pictures: ghosting, shadows and specular highlights. In the case of objects made of diffuse materials, the system is also able to compute a normal map, thus improving the geometry acquired by the scanner. Results demonstrate that our texturing procedure is quite fast (a few minutes to process more than a thousand images). Moreover, the method is highly automatic, since only a few intuitive parameters must be tuned by the user, and all required computations are particularly suited to GPU programming, making the method convenient and scalable to graphics hardware.

    This article has been published as the introduction of the special issue in Japan Forum (“Japanese Political Economy Revisited: Abenomics and Institutional Change”) and as an introduction to the book (Japanese Political Economy Revisited: Abenomics and Institutional Change, Routledge); This introductory article to the special issue on “Japanese Political Economy Revisited: Diverse Corporate Change, Institutional Transformation, and Abenomics” starts with a short summaryof the changing perceptions of Japan’s political economy from its meteoric rise as worldwide leading model in the 1970s and 1980s to its demotiontoa problem and reform case since the later 1990s. Based on this overview, it identifies some striking issue and open questions in this conventional view of Japan’s political economy as problem and the high expectations on Abenomics as Japan’s current economic reform programme. Then we discuss the articles of the special issue and their new contributionsto a better understanding of the developments at the corporate level as well as institutional change and economic reforms at the macro level in the last two decades. Finally, this introductory article ends with a short outlineof a new research programme and four central research questions about the Japanese political economy.

    International audience; Baya-Laffite and Cointet map the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations topic structure and evolution over 20 years using a digital corpus from the most renowned internal journal of the negotiations available online, the Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB). The authors’ methodological strategy combines text mining, network analysis and data visualization tools. The chapter shows how this mixed-method strategy applied to a digital corpus drawn from the ENB website, makes it possible to map climate change negotiations. Mixing traditional research methods and computer-assisted techniques, as well as manual and automated operations results in a series of unique new visual syntheses of the UNFCCC process. Narrating the visualizations allows distant readings of topics’ semantic structure and topic trajectories and thereby to test the robustness of the maps as well as the tools and methods used to produce them.

    International audience; Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are known to learn an image representation that captures concepts relevant to the task, but do so in an implicit way that hampers model interpretability. However, one could argue that such a representation is hidden in the neurons and can be made explicit by teaching the model to recognize semantically interpretable attributes that are present in the scene. We call such an intermediate layer a \emph{semantic bottleneck}. Once the attributes are learned, they can be re-combined to reach the final decision and provide both an accurate prediction and an explicit reasoning behind the CNN decision. In this paper, we look into semantic bottlenecks that capture context: we want attributes to be in groups of a few meaningful elements and participate jointly to the final decision. We use a two-layer semantic bottleneck that gathers attributes into interpretable, sparse groups, allowing them contribute differently to the final output depending on the context. We test our contextual semantic interpretable bottleneck (CSIB) on the task of landscape scenicness estimation and train the semantic interpretable bottleneck using an auxiliary database (SUN Attributes). Our model yields in predictions as accurate as a non-interpretable baseline when applied to a real-world test set of Flickr images, all while providing clear and interpretable explanations for each prediction.

    The deposits of volcanic debris avalanches (VDAs) contain diagnostic features that distinguish them from those of other landslides. In this chapter, we summarize the sedimentary characteristics and the different (litho-)facies described over the past four decades, and how findings from individual case studies can be adapted as globally applicable sedimentological tools. A plethora of descriptive terms and partially conflicting definitions emerged in the ever-growing literature on VDA deposits (VDADs). These we summarize and make recommendations for future use. Different facies models that were developed at different volcanoes might point to unique emplacement conditions (e.g. dry versus wet; confined versus unconfined) and, if confirmed, the apparent ‘conflict’ of terminology might help identify the paleo-settings of ancient VDAs. General observations of large unsaturated landslides of different origin show that preservation of source stratigraphy, (mega-)clasts, jigsaw-fractured clasts, and incorporation of runout path material are common features. Their unique composition, grain sizes, and abundance of matrix sets VDADs apart from deposits of large rockslides and debris flows. The latter can be associated with VDAs, and whether they formed syn- or post-VDAD emplacement is reflected in forensic evidence within the depositional sequences. Recent case studies illustrate the advances in analytical techniques and in understanding the processes of debris avalanche transport and deposition forty years after the eruption and lateral collapse of Mount St. Helens volcano.

    International audience; This chapter provides methodological information about implementing documentary approaches by which to analyze, discuss, and support river restoration. First, we present the kind of documentary material that can be used to analyze discourse on river restoration. We explain how to build a corpus in order to study stakeholders’ discourses and to collect specific information about river restoration. We based our analysis on scientific publications, newspaper articles, and administrative documents. Then we detail different qualitative and quantitative methods used to analyze such documentary material and the type of results they yield. We present four types of method: bibliometric analysis, content analysis, textual data analysis, and qualitative analysis. Finally, we discuss the pros and cons of documentary methods versus survey methods.
