How do we know the stuff we know? In physics and engineering, a lot of our knowledge comes from calculations. And when these calculations become difficult, we need tools to perform them. Fifty years ago, mechanical calculators (pictured left) were the tool of choice, and they allowed us to quickly add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. They are reliable, make a heck of a noise, weigh 20 pounds, and they just work. They solved many problems before the advent of the computer, contributing a huge amount to what we know today. But as science progressed, new and faster tools were required. Today, almost every day, I use my computer (pictured right) to solve the equations I encounter in my research in physics. Don’t get me wrong: many of those calculations could, in principle, still be done on the mechanical calculator, but a computer is just faster, quieter, and does not weigh as much. In the background you can see a part of the equation that I solved using my computer. Below it, the mechanical calculator and the laptop stand “back to back,” as if they are debating who is better at solving it.

Polar UDC, created largely by the Scott Polar Library at Cambridge, England, is a variant of Universal Decimal Classification. Polar UDC arranges materials by geography, rather than subject. A system of numerical classes, representing geographic regions overlays the standard UDC subject classification. This allows for the co-location, on shelves, of materials about a place, regardless of the subject. In this example, all of the books shown on the shelf are in class *440.2, which represents Nunavut, in Canada.

My creative research explores ideas around culture and its significance from a culinary perspective. During creating my installations, I work closely with my family members, research our family diet routine and regional heritage, and depict the transmission of cultures through lineage. As a family from northern China, wheat staples are essential to our diet. This piece shown in the image, Rolling, is the fourth piece out of a series of installation works named Family Dough. I created this series based on the documentation video of my mother teaching me to make wheat-based food. The other pieces in the series are Kneading, Pulling and Shaping, which describe the fundamental hand gestures during the food-making process. The pancakes in this piece are made with ceramic, and the text on ceramics are adjectives describing our family relationship. On the wood pastry board, I laser engraved the image of me and my mother’s hands while making our staple food. In addition, I hand carved a wood rolling pin to replicate the one we have been using for over 35 years at home for making pancakes; the repetitive Chinese character on the rolling pin is “gan,” which means rolling. I reflect on the process of passing down knowledge to the next generations and the impacts my mother has on me of her positive working spirit.

More than 1.25 million deaths are caused by traffic accidents every year, 95% of those are due to human error. To address and resolve this problem we are taking the help of an innovative concept, Connected Vehicle (CV). A connected car can assist the human driver by communicating with its surroundings and cooperating with other connected cars to enhance driver’s safety and comfort. Three fundamental components of this emerging technology, Connection, Communication, and Cooperation, will allow the future car to build a personality representing the human driver. This image portrays the individuality dispersing from connected cars while they are united by common goals of enhancing traffic safety, efficiency and productivity on a global scale. My research aims to determine the extents of potential benefits expected from this promising technology. The research creation project "CRSC Lightbox" presents a ‘light show’ of publicly projected still images and short moving images. The theme of the project was public skating and outdoor community infrastructure. The hand-drawn logo design is intended to express the temporality of lightbox exhibition and its creative potentials in evoking emotions and changing modes of thinking.

A subset of the Massive Auditory Lexical Decision stimuli. They are represented as sequences of MFCCs with delta and delta-delta coefficients. There are also associated label files so that the data can be used for machine learning purposes, though they are force-aligned labels and not hand-corrected labels. Designed for use during the deep learning workshop at the Morphological Processing 2019 conference in Tübingen, Germany.
