    This data set contains the ice thickness data as recorded with the AWI airborne radar system (Nixdorf et al., 1999), operated with a 150 MHz pulse of 600 ns duration. Some 20000 line kilometres of ice thickness data were recorded in the Dome Fuji region, Antarctica. These data contain the corrected and ungridded product. The original gridded product is available through doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.891323 (Karlsson et al., 2018).

    Authors: Hernández-León, Santiago;

    Carbon export (from the epipelagic towards the mesopelagic zone) and sequestration (from the mesopelagic towards the bathypelagic zone) in the ocean are reviewed. Particulate organic carbon (POC) flux, and active flux due to migrant zooplankton and micronekton are shown from the epipelagic to the mesopelagic zone, and from the latter to the bathypelagic zone. Values towards the meso- and bathypelagic zones are compared in oligotrophic and productive systems. Zooplankton and prokaryote respiration in the meso- and bathypelagic zones of the ocean are also reviewed for oligotrophic and productive systems. Values were integrated over a depth layer and are given as the flux or respiration under one square meter (in g/m**2/a) between e.g. 100 m and 1000 m depth.

    The application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer to agricultural soils increased by 3.2 % annually from 2002 to 2010. We quantified in detail the P inputs and outputs of cropland and pasture, and the P fluxes through human and livestock consumers of agricultural products, at global, regional, and national scales from 2002 to 2010. Globally, half of the total P input (21.3 Tg P yr-1) into agricultural systems accumulated in agricultural soils during this period, with the rest lost to bodies of water through complex flows. Global P accumulation in agricultural soil increased from 2002 to 2010, despite decreases in 2008 and 2009, and the P accumulation occurred primarily in cropland. Despite the global increase of soil P, 32 % of the world's cropland and 43 % of the pasture had soil P deficits. Increasing soil P deficits were found for African cropland, versus increasing P accumulation in Eastern Asia. European and North American pasture had a soil P deficit because continuous removal of biomass P by grazing exceeded P inputs. International trade played a significant role in P redistribution among countries through the flows of P in fertilizer and food among countries. Based on country-scale budgets and trends we propose policy options to potentially mitigate regional P imbalances in agricultural soils, particularly by optimizing the use of phosphate fertilizer and recycling of waste P. The trend of increasing consumption of livestock products will require more P inputs to the agricultural system, implying a low P-use efficiency aggravating the P stocks scarcity in the future. The global and regional phosphorus budgets and their PUEs in agricultural systems is publicly available at https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.875296. Supplement to: Lun, Fei; Liu, Junguo; Ciais, Philippe; Nesme, Thomas; Chang, Jinfeng; Wang, Rong; Goll, Daniel S; Sardans, Jordi; Penuelas, Josep; Obersteiner, Michael (2017): Global and regional phosphorus budgets in agricultural systems and their implications for phosphorus-use efficiency. Permafrost thaw and ice wedge degradation lead to drastic landscape changes in the permafrost region. With this data set we investigated the cliff retreat of the Sobo-Sise Cliff (SSC), a high ice-bearing yedoma cliff in the Lena River Delta. The 1,660 m long cliff SSC extends from 72°32'34 N / 128°15'59 E to 72°32'06 N / 128°18'21 E and is located on the Sardakhskaya channel, which is one of the main Lena river branches in the Lena River Delta. Erosion rates for the SSC were determined based on satellite images from different sensors (Corona, Hexagon, Landsat, Planet cube-sat) for the period 1965-2018. Cliff front lines were manually digitized and erosion rates were calculated with the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) tool (Himmelstoos et al. 2018). The study Fuchs et al. (2020) (DOI:10.3389/feart.2020.00336) shows that the up to 27.7 m high SSC erodes in average 15.7 m yr-1 (2015-2018). During the entire observed time period from 1965-2018, the SSC retreated in average 484 m (ranging from 322 - 680 m). This dataset includes the mean annual erosion rates of the yedoma SSC for the time periods 1965-1975, 1975-2000, 2000-2005, 2005-2010, 2010-2015, and 2015-2018, as well as the absolute cliff retreat rates over the entire period 1965-2018, which are derived from remote sensing imagery analyzed with the DSAS tool (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.918505). Related trend data for this region, based on Landsat trend analysis are available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.884136 (Nitze, 2018).

    Authors: Schug, Franz; Frantz, David; Okujeni, Akpona; van der Linden, Sebastian; +1 Authors

    The increasing impact of humans on land and ongoing global population growth requires an improved understanding of land cover (LC) processes in general and of those related to settlements in particular. The heterogeneity of settlements and landscapes as well as the importance of not only mapping, but also characterizing anthropogenic and landscape structures suggests using a sub-pixel mapping approach for analysing related LC from space. This map has been created using a regression-based unmixing approach for mapping built-up surfaces and infrastructure, woody vegetation and non-woody vegetation for all of Austria at 10 m spatial resolution. Spectral-temporal metrics from all Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 observation in 2018 have been used to create synthetically mixed training data for regression. An elevation threshold of 1350m has been applied above which built-up surfaces and infrastructures were masked out. The mapping workflow has been established in the corresponding publication. This dataset is an enhanced dataset that uses an alternative set of spectral-temporal metrics for land cover modeling, including: - 25th, 50th and 75th quantile of Sentinel-2 reflectance - Average Sentinel-1 VH polarized backscatter - 90th quantile and standard deviation of Sentinel-2 Tasseled Cap Greenness This enhanced set makes use of Sentinel-1 imagery, which reduces confusion of built-up features and seasonal soil-covered surfaces. Sentinel-2 Tasseled Cap Greenness is a more robust indicator for vegetation in temperate regions than the NDVI, which was used in the corresponding publication. The file is of GeoTiff format and contains three bands: Band 1 - Fraction of built-up surfaces and infrastructure Band 2 - Fraction of woody vegetation Band 3 - Fraction of non-woody vegetation For further information, please see the publication or contact Franz Schug (franz.schug@geo.hu-berlin.de). Sentinel-1 data was kindly provided by TU Vienna (https://www.geo.tuwien.ac.at/) through EODC (https://www.eodc.eu/). This research has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 741950).

    Wetlands store large amounts of carbon, and depending on their status and type, they release specific amounts of methane gas to the atmosphere. The connection between wetland type and methane emission has been investigated in various studies and utilized in climate change monitoring and modelling. For improved estimation of methane emissions, land surface models require information such as the wetland fraction and its dynamics over large areas. Existing datasets of wetland dynamics present the total amount of wetland (fraction) for each model grid cell, but do not discriminate the different wetland types like permanent lakes, periodically inundated areas or peatlands. Wetland types differently influence methane fluxes and thus their contribution to the total wetland fraction should be quantified. Especially wetlands of permafrost regions are expected to have a strong impact on future climate due to soil thawing. In this study ENIVSAT ASAR Wide Swath data was tested for operational monitoring of the distribution of areas with a long-term SW near 1 (hSW) in northern Russia (SW = degree of saturation with water, 1 = saturated), which is a specific characteristic of peatlands. For the whole northern Russia, areas with hSW were delineated and discriminated from dynamic and open water bodies for the years 2007 and 2008. The area identified with this method amounts to approximately 300,000 km**2 in northern Siberia in 2007. It overlaps with zones of high carbon storage. Comparison with a range of related datasets (static and dynamic) showed that hSW represents not only peatlands but also temporary wetlands associated with post-forest fire conditions in permafrost regions. Annual long-term monitoring of change in boreal and tundra environments is possible with the presented approach. Sentinel-1, the successor of ENVISAT ASAR, will provide data that may allow continuous monitoring of these wetland dynamics in the future complementing global observations of wetland fraction. ENIVSAT ASAR Wide Swath data was tested for operational monitoring of the distribution of areas with a long-term high degree of saturation with water (hSW) as well as open water (10 day intervals). For the whole northern Russia, areas with hSW were delineated and discriminated from dynamic and open water bodies for the years 2007 and 2008. The identified areas overlap with zones of high carbon storage. Comparison with a range of related datasets (static and dynamic) showed that hSW represents not only peatlands but also temporary wetlands associated with post-forest fire conditions in permafrost regions. This experimental wetland product has been compiled within the framework of the ESA STSE ALANIS Methane project (www.alanis-methane.info). It covers most lowland areas of Siberia. The maps represent the snow-free season of 2007 and 2008, including open water with 10 day intervals for July and August 2007 over selected regions. Please consult the product guide regarding known issues and documentation. Quality is constrained by data availability, which is documented in the *day (days since last update) and *num (number of acquisitions used for the 10 day period) files. Nominal resolution is ~75m and projection is Universal Polar Stereographic North, WGS84. The the region of interest has been subdivided into 10 parts with varying extent. Supplement to: Reschke, Julia; Bartsch, Annett; Schlaffer, Stefan; Schepaschenko, Dmitry (2012): Capability of C-Band SAR for operational wetland monitoring at high latitudes.     Authors: Hernández-León, Santiago;
