A flag area measure on a finite-dimensional euclidean vector space is a continuous translation invariant valuation with values in the space of signed measures on the flag manifold consisting of a unit vector $v$ and a $(p + 1)$-dimensional linear subspace containing $v$. Using local parallel sets, Hinderer constructed examples of $SO(n)$- covariant flag area measures. There is an explicit formula for his flag area measures evaluated on polytopes, which involves the squared cosine of the angle between two subspaces. We construct a more general space of $SO(n)$-covariant flag area measures, which satisfy a similar formula for polytopes, but with an arbitrary elementary symmetric polynomial in the squared cosines of the principal angles between two subspaces. Hinderer's flag area measure correspond to the special case where the elementary symmetric polynomial is just the product. We also provide a classification result in the spirit of Hadwiger's theorem. We introduce a natural notion of smoothness and show that every smooth $SO(n)$-covariant flag area measure is a linear combination of the ones which we constructed. The Event Horizon Telescope, global array of millimetre telescopes, has now enabled studies of nearby supermassive black holes on sub-horizon length scales. This unprecedented access opens a window onto not only the high-energy astrophysics of black hole accretion and jet formation, but also the nature of gravity in the heretofore unexplored strongly non-linear regime near the black hole horizon. I will summarize the state of the Event Horizon Telescope, what results obtained over the past 7 years, and how a revolution in capability will produce precision tests of strong gravity over the next 2-3 years.

Abstract Background Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is a powerful tool for studying complex biological systems, such as tumor heterogeneity and tissue microenvironments. However, the sources of technical and biological variation in primary solid tumor tissues and patient-derived mouse xenografts for scRNA-seq are not well understood. Results We use low temperature (6 °C) protease and collagenase (37 °C) to identify the transcriptional signatures associated with tissue dissociation across a diverse scRNA-seq dataset comprising 155,165 cells from patient cancer tissues, patient-derived breast cancer xenografts, and cancer cell lines. We observe substantial variation in standard quality control metrics of cell viability across conditions and tissues. From the contrast between tissue protease dissociation at 37 °C or 6 °C, we observe that collagenase digestion results in a stress response. We derive a core gene set of 512 heat shock and stress response genes, including FOS and JUN, induced by collagenase (37 °C), which are minimized by dissociation with a cold active protease (6 °C). While induction of these genes was highly conserved across all cell types, cell type-specific responses to collagenase digestion were observed in patient tissues. Conclusions The method and conditions of tumor dissociation influence cell yield and transcriptome state and are both tissue- and cell-type dependent. Interpretation of stress pathway expression differences in cancer single-cell studies, including components of surface immune recognition such as MHC class I, may be especially confounded. We define a core set of 512 genes that can assist with the identification of such effects in dissociated scRNA-seq experiments.

Depuis le début de 2005, l'Enquête sur les voyages des résidents du Canada (EVRC) a été menée afin de mesurer les voyages intérieurs au Canada. Elle remplace l'Enquête sur les voyages des Canadiens (EVC). Grâce aux changements apportés aux définitions et au questionnaire, les estimations de voyages intérieurs se rapprocheront des directives internationales recommandées par l'Organisation mondiale du tourisme (OMT) et la Commission statistique des Nations Unies. L'Enquête sur les voyages des résidents du Canada est parrainée par Statistique Canada, la Commission canadienne du tourisme (CCT), les gouvernements provinciaux et certains organismes fédéraux. Elle mesure l'ampleur des voyages intérieurs au Canada, du point de vue de la demande. L'enquête vise à recueillir de l'information sur le volume de voyages et des dépenses des résidents du Canada selon l'origine du voyage, la destination, la durée, le type d'hébergement utilisé, le but du voyage, le moyen de transport, etc., à recueillir de l'information sur l'incidence des voyages et fournir le profil sociodémographique des voyageurs et des non-voyageurs. Les estimations permettent d'effectuer des analyses sur une base trimestrielle à l'échelle nationale, provinciale et régionale (à divers degrés de précision) concernant les informations suivantes : nombre total de voyages d'un même jour et d'une nuit ou plus effectués par les résidents du Canada et dont la destination était au Canada; visites d'un même jour et d'une nuit ou plus au Canada; raison principale du voyage et activités principales effectuées pendant le voyage; dépenses effectuées pour les voyages d'un même jour et d'une nuit ou plus au Canada par les résidents du Canada, au total et selon la catégorie de dépenses; moyens de transport utilisés pendant le voyage (principal/autre); visites-personnes, visites-ménages, dépenses totales et par catégorie de dépenses pour chaque endroit visité au Canada; nuitées-personnes et nuitées-ménages passées à chaque endroit visité au Canada, au total et selon le type d'hébergement utilisé; utilisation de forfaits de voyage et dépenses qui y sont associées et participation à des excursions guidées en autocar/autre; personne ou organisme ayant payé les coûts du voyage (ménage, gouvernement, employeur privé); caractéristiques démographiques des adultes qui ont effectué des voyages et ceux qui n'en n'ont pas effectués; composition du groupe des voyageurs. Les utilisateurs principaux des données de l'EVRC sont Statistique Canada, la Commission canadienne du tourisme, les provinces et les bureaux de tourisme. Les médias, les entreprises, les consultants, ainsi que les chercheurs, comptent parmi les autres utilisateurs. Notes: Fichier de données des personnes: L'ensemble de données (ou fichier) des personnes renferme les données au sujet des voyageurs et des non-voyageurs. Celles des voyageurs incluent toute les personnes de 18 ans et plus qui ont fait au moins un voyage au cours du mois de référence. Celles des non-voyageurs incluent les personnes qui ne voyagent pas. À chaque répondant à l'EVRC correspond un enregistrement dans le fichier des personnes, que le répondant ait effectué ou non un voyage au cours du mois de référence ou de l'année de référence. Le fichier de microdonnées des personnes contient des renseignements sociodémographiques touchant les voyageurs comme les non-voyageurs. Il permet d'établir des profils sociodémographiques et de calculer la fréquence des voyages. Il permet, par exemple, de comparer l'âge, le sexe ou le niveau de scolarité des voyageurs et des non-voyageurs, ou encore de déterminer le pourcentage de la population âgée de 55 ans et plus qui a voyagé. Le fichier de microdonnées des personnes ne fournit pas de renseignements sur le nombre de voyages ou de voyages-personnes; il fournit plutôt des données sur le nombre de voyageurs et de non-voyageurs. Si une personne a fait plus d'un voyage au cours de la période de référence, elle ne sera considérée qu'une seule fois à titre de voyageur.;

CERN-LHC. Measurements of charged-particle fragmentation functions of jets produced in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions can provide insight into the modification of parton showers in the hot, dense medium created in the collisions. ATLAS has measured jets in sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV PB PB collisions at the LHC using a data set recorded in 2011 with an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb^{-1}. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameter values R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. Here is the summary of results for the charged particle (CH) longitudinal momentum fraction, Z = PT(CH).PT(JET)/ABS(PT(JET))**2, distributions, D(Z) = (1/N(JET))*D(N(CH))/DZ and distributions of transverse momenta of particles in jets, D(PT(CH)) = (1/N(JET))*D(N(CH))/DPT(CH). The jets have PT>100 GeV, |ETA|<2.1, and the particle to jet association is done using geometrical matching with DELTA R <= 0.4 for all three different R values. Ratio of D(z) distributions for R=0.3 jets for central to peripheral events.
