description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2016IEEE Authors: Christophe Salzmann; Denis Gillet; Yves Piguet;Christophe Salzmann; Denis Gillet; Yves Piguet;Deploying remote laboratories at a large scale is the next challenge in remote experimentation. It is referred as Massive Open Online Labs (MOOLs). Being able to sustain a massive number of users accessing a specific resource concurrently is a complex task. This paper presents technical solutions, currently deployed, to implement such a remote lab in a MOOC. The control system lab deployed in edX, where more that 200 students access concurrently a farm of 20 electrical drives, is used as an example. Gamification mechanisms which accommodate even more students are proposed.

Here, the view of an open access publisher, MDPI, is presented with regards to sustainability within publishing. MDPI’s understanding of sustainability is given and some of the concrete actions it leads to. These include supporting umbrella initiatives, exploring alternative business and editorial models, elements of open science, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of published content. Our aim is to demonstrate actions that could be taken by other publishers and to invite dialog with the broader research community for how a large open access publisher can contribute to a sustainable knowledge ecosystem.

In this paper, we introduce the AppComposer Web app to address this issue. The AppComposer aims at empowering teachers to easily translate and adapt existing apps that fit their educational contexts. Developers do not need to provide extensive translations and configurations of their apps and can simply follow certain guidelines to make their apps translatable and adaptable by the AppComposer. Since the AppComposer makes use of the standard internationalization specification used by OpenSocial, even external apps can be translated without contacting the original developer.
