    Recently, a number of authors who work on web application modelling have paid attention to the ideas regarding separation of concerns that underlie aspect-orientation, as well as some ideas that come from the model-driven development community. They attempt to improve the representation and separation of some concerns such as customisation or navigational concerns that are scattered throughout different software artifacts and tangled with other concerns in order to give a best support to the evolution of web applications. This paper surveys recent proposals in this field and compares them within a homogeneous framework that bridges the gap between the many different terminologies used, and highlights open problems that need further research.     Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) solutions rely on process support systems to implement exogenous message workflows whereby one can devise and deploy a process that helps keep a number of applications’ data in synchrony or develop new functionality on top of them. EAI solutions are prone to failures due to the fact that they are highly distributed and combine stand-alone applications with specific-purpose integration processes. The literature provides two execution models for workflows, namely, synchronous and asynchronous. In this paper, we report on an architecture that addresses the problem of endowing the asynchronous model with fault-tolerance capabilities, which is a problem for which the literature does not provide a conclusion.     The literature provides many techniques to infer rules that can be used to configure web information extractors. Unfortunately, these techniques have been developed independently, which makes it very difficult to compare the results: there is not even a collection of datasets on which these techniques can be assessed. Furthermore, there is not a common infrastructure to implement these techniques, which makes implementing them costly. In this paper, we propose a framework that helps software engineers implement their techniques and compare the results. Having such a framework allows comparing techniques side by side and our experiments prove that it helps reduce development costs.     Typical companies rely on their software ecosystems to support and optimise their business processes. There are a few proposals to help software engineers devise enterprise application integration solutions. Some companies need to adapt these proposals to particular contexts. Unfortunately, our analysis reveals that they are not so easy to maintain as expected. This motivated us to work on a new proposal that has been carefully designed in order to reduce maintainability efforts.     When integrating the information of a number of applications, one solution is to provide one or more unified entry points to the applications. A challenging task in this context is to translate the user query, which is posed over the unified entry point, to the integrated applications. The user query is expressed in terms of the entry point schema and the integrated applications do not accept this query because they have different schemes. In this demo, we present SPARQL Query Splitter, a tool that translates SPARQL user queries posed over an entry point schema to a number of queries over the application schemes. Our tool uses the mappings between the schemes to perform the translation by means of a symbolic calculator.     Some of the greatest challenges when developing Internet sites are related to two disciplines: Information Architecture (IA) and Navigation Design (ND). However, there is a disconnection between these two fields, especially due to the misunderstanding that informa- tion architecture and web design are mutually exclusive. A way to bring these two fields closer and integrate them into multidisciplinary projects is to focus on deliverables, because they are the artifacts that are shared among stakeholders, customers and all the members of the development team. This paper is focused on one of the most widely used information architecture deliverables: sitemaps. A metamodel for high-level sitemaps is specified, as a way of determining the building blocks used in this kind of deliverable. Furthermore, a set of model to text transformations have been defined in order to have a preliminary website sketch focused on structural and utility navigation, the main concerns that are addressed in sitemaps.     Enterprise application integrations involve the participation of several existing applications with which the integration solution exchanges data over LANs and the Internet. In these scenarios, operations might occasionally produce exceptional results at runtime due to impairments introduced by the electronic infrastructure such as node crashes, messages lost, delayed or incorrectly composed by applications. To address the problem, the paper suggests a domain specific language to specify the integration solution: it produces platform-independent models and has built-in primitives to produce events that notify of potential exceptional situations. The paper also shows how these events can be processed by an event condition action–based monitor to trigger recovery actions.     We propose a technique that takes two or more web pages generated by the same server-side template and tries to learn a regular expression that represents it and helps extract relevant information from similar pages. Our experimental results on real-world web sites demonstrate that our technique outperforms others in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency and is not affected by HTML errors.     The literature provides a variety of techniques to build the information extractors on which some data integration systems rely. In formation extraction techniques are usually based on extraction rules that require maintenance and adaptation if web sources change. We present our preliminary steps towards an unsupervised information ex traction technique that searches web documents for shared patterns and fragments them until finding the relevant information that should be ex tracted. Experimental results on 1230 real-web documents demonstrate that our system performs fast and achieves promising results.     Recently, a number of authors who work on web application modelling have paid attention to the ideas regarding separation of concerns that underlie aspect-orientation, as well as some ideas that come from the model-driven development community. They attempt to improve the representation and separation of some concerns such as customisation or navigational concerns that are scattered throughout different software artifacts and tangled with other concerns in order to give a best support to the evolution of web applications. This paper surveys recent proposals in this field and compares them within a homogeneous framework that bridges the gap between the many different terminologies used, and highlights open problems that need further research.     Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) solutions rely on process support systems to implement exogenous message workflows whereby one can devise and deploy a process that helps keep a number of applications’ data in synchrony or develop new functionality on top of them. EAI solutions are prone to failures due to the fact that they are highly distributed and combine stand-alone applications with specific-purpose integration processes. The literature provides two execution models for workflows, namely, synchronous and asynchronous. In this paper, we report on an architecture that addresses the problem of endowing the asynchronous model with fault-tolerance capabilities, which is a problem for which the literature does not provide a conclusion.     The literature provides many techniques to infer rules that can be used to configure web information extractors. Unfortunately, these techniques have been developed independently, which makes it very difficult to compare the results: there is not even a collection of datasets on which these techniques can be assessed. Furthermore, there is not a common infrastructure to implement these techniques, which makes implementing them costly. In this paper, we propose a framework that helps software engineers implement their techniques and compare the results. Having such a framework allows comparing techniques side by side and our experiments prove that it helps reduce development costs.     Typical companies rely on their software ecosystems to support and optimise their business processes.     When integrating the information of a number of applications, one solution is to provide one or more unified entry points to the applications. A challenging task in this context is to translate the user query, which is posed over the unified entry point, to the integrated applications. The user query is expressed in terms of the entry point schema and the integrated applications do not accept this query because they have different schemes. In this demo, we present SPARQL Query Splitter, a tool that translates SPARQL user queries posed over an entry point schema to a number of queries over the application schemes. Our tool uses the mappings between the schemes to perform the translation by means of a symbolic calculator.     Some of the greatest challenges when developing Internet sites are related to two disciplines: Information Architecture (IA) and Navigation Design (ND). However, there is a disconnection between these two fields, especially due to the misunderstanding that informa- tion architecture and web design are mutually exclusive. A way to bring these two fields closer and integrate them into multidisciplinary projects is to focus on deliverables, because they are the artifacts that are shared among stakeholders, customers and all the members of the development team. This paper is focused on one of the most widely used information architecture deliverables: sitemaps. A metamodel for high-level sitemaps is specified, as a way of determining the building blocks used in this kind of deliverable. Furthermore, a set of model to text transformations have been defined in order to have a preliminary website sketch focused on structural and utility navigation, the main concerns that are addressed in sitemaps.     Enterprise application integrations involve the participation of several existing applications with which the integration solution exchanges data over LANs and the Internet. In these scenarios, operations might occasionally produce exceptional results at runtime due to impairments introduced by the electronic infrastructure such as node crashes, messages lost, delayed or incorrectly composed by applications. To address the problem, the paper suggests a domain specific language to specify the integration solution: it produces platform-independent models and has built-in primitives to produce events that notify of potential exceptional situations. The paper also shows how these events can be processed by an event condition action–based monitor to trigger recovery actions.     We propose a technique that takes two or more web pages generated by the same server-side template and tries to learn a regular expression that represents it and helps extract relevant information from similar pages.     The literature provides a variety of techniques to build the information extractors on which some data integration systems rely. In formation extraction techniques are usually based on extraction rules that require maintenance and adaptation if web sources change. We present our preliminary steps towards an unsupervised information ex traction technique that searches web documents for shared patterns and fragments them until finding the relevant information that should be ex tracted. Experimental results on 1230 real-web documents demonstrate that our system performs fast and achieves promising results.
