description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Thesis 2020 Canada EnglishElectronic version published by Vancouver Island University McKenzie Bingham, Ericia;McKenzie Bingham, Ericia; This applied project examined Response to Intervention evidence-based programs that teachers can use at Tier 1 in the teaching of reading to support intermediate and secondary students who encounter reading challenges in the general education classroom. Evidence-based reading programs demonstrated effectiveness in supporting students’ reading practices, particularly those students who are struggling to read as well as those who read at the frustration level. The handbook provides teachers with the information they will need to navigate the teaching and assessment of reading. Its development was supported with reviews of both past and current reading research, and it presents practical strategies for teaching and assessments. It will provide teachers with the opportunity of assessing students’ areas of strengths and weaknesses and analyzing the evidence to make informed instructional decisions. The focus of this applied project is support for intermediate and secondary students. It is hoped that if teachers adopt the approach of using RTI and evidence-based programs in their teaching of reading as presented in the handbook, these evidence-based practices will support students’ motivation and reading skill development. https://viurrspace.ca/bitstream/handle/10613/23205/McKenzieBinghamProject.pdf?sequence=3

Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with five Vietnamese immigrant parents. Findings show the emerged themes in the perceptions of Vietnamese immigrant parents towards the effects of their settlement experiences on their children’s adaptation, what factors contributed to their overcoming the hardship and what support they have received. My hope is that findings from this study will provide current and new Vietnamese immigrants in Canada with necessary knowledge regarding resettlement experiences and how to overcome any challenges. Hopefully, this study supports more Vietnamese people immigrating to Canada with their families to better adapt to their new homeland and schools. In addition, emerging knowledge could also help educators and teachers better understand and be aware of difficulties their Vietnamese immigrant students may face. https://viurrspace.ca/bitstream/handle/10613/23604/Nguyen.pdf?sequence=3&isAllowed=y

This project work was prepared to explore innovative teaching strategies for rural Indian primary schools with an intention to prepare a grade one to five handbook for teachers. The design was based on the British Columbia (BC) curriculum model developed in Canada on the basis of innovative teaching strategies. Most of the rural Indian primary school use the traditional teaching strategies; these out-dated strategies are ones that I experienced both as a student and teacher. These teaching strategies did not help the teachers engage students in the classroom. My experiences and a strong concern about today‘s students in rural India were the driving forces behind this research project. I hope this handbook will be helpful in providing a new path for the rural Indian primary school teachers. I believe this research project will result in (a) providing innovative teaching strategies to rural Indian school teachers and (b) more engaged students in rural Indian classrooms. https://viurrspace.ca/bitstream/handle/10613/6216/Mann.pdf?sequence=3&isAllowed=y

Children are coming to school with increasing rates of unaddressed social-emotional needs, along with challenges directly related to these needs. Essentially, these deficits make it necessary for schools to go beyond a sole focus on facilitating academic learning, and place a targeted focus on social-emotional learning (SEL). Research indicates a strong correlation between social-emotional learning, cognitive development and academic success, reinforcing the need for this intentional shift. The purpose of this project was to investigate how a teacher might integrate social-emotional learning and mindfulness strategies, and enhance children’s emotional intelligence, to improve the learning environment and experience of elementary students. I created a website, SEL4ED, as a social-emotional learning repository that can be used by educators, parents, and students alike. The feedback received about SEL and the SEL4ED site, indicated that educators recognize the importance of SEL for students, and want resources, tools, strategies, and ideas, so that they may best address these needs in a timely and effective manner. Growing evidence demonstrates that to promote a significant shift in social-emotional outcomes and academic achievement, districts, schools, and educators all need to value SEL instruction, and commit to its integration within the daily curriculum. This targeted focus is a critical factor in how we teach to the “whole child”. SEL4ED is designed to be a collaborative resource, and my hope is that educators will continue to contribute and share their ideas and experiences on the site. These contributions will help develop, grow, and enhance the repository, and support others in their endeavours to teach to both the hearts, and minds, of today’s students. https://viuspace.viu.ca/bitstream/handle/10613/2633/darci_gilmore_process_paper_final_2015.pdf?sequence=3
