  • The transversity distribution function can be studied in inclusive one- and two-hadrons production in DIS off a transversely polarized target. The measurement of the spin asymmetries in the azimuthal distribution of the one- or two-hadrons, and of the Collins or di-hadron fragmentation functions, allows to access the transversity distribution function. In this thesis the measurements of the one- and two-hadron transverse spin asymmetries performed by the COMPASS experiment is discussed. Finally the first extraction of the transversity PDF from two-hadron asymmetries is perfomed.

    This paper evaluates the effect of development project aid from the World Bank and China on firms’ sales growth using a large dataset of 110864 firms, mapped into six broad industrial clusters, spanning 121 countries between 2001 and 2016. We find, on average, no significant effect of the World Bank or Chinese ODA projects on the growth of firm sales. The outcome changes, however, when we differentiate across geographic regions and industrial sectors. Only Asian firms gain from the World Bank projects, whereas we do not find such differences for Chinese aid. Compared to sector-specific, region-specific aid from both sources positively affect firm performance. Moreover, firm operating in the transport sector seem to benefit from Chinese ODA projects, whereas firms operating in the mineral sector see their sales reduced after the Chinese intervention. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study (1) to compare the effectiveness of the World Bank and Chinese aid on firm sales, and (2) to distinguish between project-specific and region specific aid and evaluate the contribution of both the World Bank and Chinese ODA projects through these channels.

    Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in galaxy clusters, yet their radial profile, power spectrum, and connection to host cluster properties are poorly known. Merging galaxy clusters hosting diffuse polarized emission in the form of radio relics offer a unique possibility to study the magnetic fields in these complex systems. In this paper, we investigate the intracluster magnetic field in Abell 2345. This cluster hosts two radio relics that we detected in polarization with 1-2 GHz Jansky Very Large Array observations. X-ray XMM-Newton images show a very disturbed morphology. We derived the rotation measure (RM) of five polarized sources within ∼1 Mpc from the cluster centre applying the RM synthesis. Both, the average RM and the RM dispersion radial profiles probe the presence of intracluster magnetic fields. Using the thermal electron density profile derived from X-ray analysis and simulating a 3D magnetic field with fluctuations following a power spectrum derived from magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, we build mock RM images of the cluster. We constrained the magnetic field profile in the eastern radio relic sector by comparing simulated and observed RM images. We find that, within the framework of our model, the data require a magnetic field scaling with thermal electron density as B(r) ∝ ne(r). The best model has a central magnetic field (within a 200 kpc radius) of 2.8 $\pm 0.1 \ \mu$ G. The average magnetic field at the position of the eastern relic is $\sim 0.3 \ \mu$ G, a factor 2.7 lower than the equipartition estimate.

    In this paper we study the typical dilemma of social coordination between a riskdominant convention and a payoff-dominant convention. In particular, we consider a model where a population of agents play a coordination game over time, choosing both the action and the network of agents with whom to interact. The main novelty with respect to the existing literature is that: (i) agents come in two distinct types, (ii) the interaction with a different type is costly, and (iii) an agent?s type is unobservable prior to interaction. We show that when the cost of interacting with a different type is small with respect to the payoff of coordination, then the payoff-dominant convention is the only stochastically stable convention; instead, when the cost of interacting with a different type is large, the only stochastically stable conventions are those where all agents of one type play the payoff-dominant action and all agents of the other type play the risk-dominant action.

    Plenary Talk with the title :CAN DYNAMICAL MODELS IN BIOLOGY AND NATURAL SCIENCES GO BEYOND INFINITY? Abstract: Many mathematical models in the form of Ordinary (ODEs) and/or Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) trying to approximate the dynamics of biological and natural systems may in certain regimes reach infinity, i.e. blow up in finite time. Take for example the celebrated integrate-and-fire (IF) model that constitutes the backbone of many models in computational neuroscience or many population dynamics models. This ''peculiar" behaviour for a physical/biological/natural sytem rises various fundamental questions: are these equations well-defined? are the selected variables the appropriate for the modelling of the systems dynamics? are there solutions beyond inifnity? To answer these questions we have addressed a numerical framework that can be applied both to ODEs and PDEs cite{NaturComm} that, upon suitable singular transformations allows the system to ``go beyond infinity", with the solution becoming again not-singular. Thus we can study the dynamics ``around infinity", bypasssing the numerical problems that are asociated with the singularity at infinity. The proposed approach sets the stage for the systematic analysis of both the numerics and the physics of dynamics that go to infinity in finite time for a broader set of such problems

    The accumulation of water and sludge in oil storage tanks leads to microbial contamination. The study of these microbial communities is of particular interest, especially the sulfate reducing microorganisms (SRM) which are mainly responsible for microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). Usually, the development of those microorganisms is controlled by the addition of biocides.     The Alto Valle of Rio Negro and Neuquén is an intensive irrigated fruit producing area. The existence of a shallow water table modifies the water content in the soil profile. It is important to distinguish the effect and estimate the amount of water capillary rise in order to enhance the irrigation management and allow the crop to achieve its maximum yield and development in non-stress conditions. The aim of this trial was to quantify and associate water content of soil profile with water status of pear trees, using different methods. In a Bartlett pear orchard planted on 2003, surfaced irrigated, the following variables were measured during the 2017-2018 growing season: soil water content at three depths (0.20 m, 0.40 m, 0.60 m) and water table level (WTL). Additionally, soil profile and texture class were described. Evapotranspiration (ETm) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were calculated with data of the automatic weather station. Stomata conductance (Gs) was measured with a leaf porometer in three different moments of the growing season. Moisture stress index (MSI) was calculated from all Sentinel 2A images available for the season. The capillary water input into the root zone from a shallow water table is evident in the continuous records of sensors. This phenomenon keeps soil water content within the readily available water range. The Gs measures showed that the crop water status was appropriate and that values were high compared to those referred to deciduous trees. The MSI values obtained were between the limits of a well-irrigated crop. These results agree with the non-restrictive condition observed in the soil water balance.     Abstract:This paper is the first to consider the link between information conveyed by the facial expressions of a range of economic actors and economic activity. A collection of photographs is used to construct indicators of emotions communicated by the facial expressions. The indicators correspond to the US economy for the period 1996-2018. Significant links between the level of economic activity and indices of emotional states are observed. Beyond contemporaneous associations, the indicators are shown to anticipate business cycle dynamics. Indices summarizing emotions linked to policy making and the stock market contain more information than indicators linked to corporations.

  • The transversity distribution function can be studied in inclusive one- and two-hadrons production in DIS off a transversely polarized target. The measurement of the spin asymmetries in the azimuthal distribution of the one- or two-hadrons, and of the Collins or di-hadron fragmentation functions, allows to access the transversity distribution function. In this thesis the measurements of the one- and two-hadron transverse spin asymmetries performed by the COMPASS experiment is discussed. Finally the first extraction of the transversity PDF from two-hadron asymmetries is perfomed.

    This paper evaluates the effect of development project aid from the World Bank and China on firms’ sales growth using a large dataset of 110864 firms, mapped into six broad industrial clusters, spanning 121 countries between 2001 and 2016. We find, on average, no significant effect of the World Bank or Chinese ODA projects on the growth of firm sales. The outcome changes, however, when we differentiate across geographic regions and industrial sectors. Only Asian firms gain from the World Bank projects, whereas we do not find such differences for Chinese aid. Compared to sector-specific, region-specific aid from both sources positively affect firm performance. Moreover, firm operating in the transport sector seem to benefit from Chinese ODA projects, whereas firms operating in the mineral sector see their sales reduced after the Chinese intervention. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study (1) to compare the effectiveness of the World Bank and Chinese aid on firm sales, and (2) to distinguish between project-specific and region specific aid and evaluate the contribution of both the World Bank and Chinese ODA projects through these channels.

    Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in galaxy clusters, yet their radial profile, power spectrum, and connection to host cluster properties are poorly known. Merging galaxy clusters hosting diffuse polarized emission in the form of radio relics offer a unique possibility to study the magnetic fields in these complex systems. In this paper, we investigate the intracluster magnetic field in Abell 2345. This cluster hosts two radio relics that we detected in polarization with 1-2 GHz Jansky Very Large Array observations. X-ray XMM-Newton images show a very disturbed morphology. We derived the rotation measure (RM) of five polarized sources within ∼1 Mpc from the cluster centre applying the RM synthesis. Both, the average RM and the RM dispersion radial profiles probe the presence of intracluster magnetic fields. Using the thermal electron density profile derived from X-ray analysis and simulating a 3D magnetic field with fluctuations following a power spectrum derived from magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, we build mock RM images of the cluster. We constrained the magnetic field profile in the eastern radio relic sector by comparing simulated and observed RM images. We find that, within the framework of our model, the data require a magnetic field scaling with thermal electron density as B(r) ∝ ne(r). The best model has a central magnetic field (within a 200 kpc radius) of 2.8 $\pm 0.1 \ \mu$ G. The average magnetic field at the position of the eastern relic is $\sim 0.3 \ \mu$ G, a factor 2.7 lower than the equipartition estimate.

    In this paper we study the typical dilemma of social coordination between a riskdominant convention and a payoff-dominant convention. In particular, we consider a model where a population of agents play a coordination game over time, choosing both the action and the network of agents with whom to interact. The main novelty with respect to the existing literature is that: (i) agents come in two distinct types, (ii) the interaction with a different type is costly, and (iii) an agent?s type is unobservable prior to interaction. We show that when the cost of interacting with a different type is small with respect to the payoff of coordination, then the payoff-dominant convention is the only stochastically stable convention; instead, when the cost of interacting with a different type is large, the only stochastically stable conventions are those where all agents of one type play the payoff-dominant action and all agents of the other type play the risk-dominant action.

    Plenary Talk with the title :CAN DYNAMICAL MODELS IN BIOLOGY AND NATURAL SCIENCES GO BEYOND INFINITY? Abstract: Many mathematical models in the form of Ordinary (ODEs) and/or Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) trying to approximate the dynamics of biological and natural systems may in certain regimes reach infinity, i.e. blow up in finite time. Take for example the celebrated integrate-and-fire (IF) model that constitutes the backbone of many models in computational neuroscience or many population dynamics models. This ''peculiar" behaviour for a physical/biological/natural sytem rises various fundamental questions: are these equations well-defined? are the selected variables the appropriate for the modelling of the systems dynamics? are there solutions beyond inifnity? To answer these questions we have addressed a numerical framework that can be applied both to ODEs and PDEs cite{NaturComm} that, upon suitable singular transformations allows the system to ``go beyond infinity", with the solution becoming again not-singular. Thus we can study the dynamics ``around infinity", bypasssing the numerical problems that are asociated with the singularity at infinity. The proposed approach sets the stage for the systematic analysis of both the numerics and the physics of dynamics that go to infinity in finite time for a broader set of such problems

    The accumulation of water and sludge in oil storage tanks leads to microbial contamination. The study of these microbial communities is of particular interest, especially the sulfate reducing microorganisms (SRM) which are mainly responsible for microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC).
