    The estimation of losses plays a key role in the process of building any electrical machine. How to estimate those losses while designing any machine; by obtaining the characteristic of the electrical steel from the catalogue and calculate the losses. However, this way is inaccurate since the electrical steel performs several manufacturing processes during the process of building any machine, which affects directly the magnetic property of the electrical steel and accordingly the characteristic of the electrical steel will be affected. That means the B–H curve of the steel that was obtained from the catalogue will be changed. Moreover, during loading and rotating the machine, some important changes occur to the B–H characteristic of the electrical steel such as the stress on the laminated iron. Accordingly, the pre-estimated losses are completely far from the actual losses because they were estimated based on the data of the electrical steel obtained from the catalogue. So in order to estimate the losses precisely significant factors of the manufacturing processes must be included. The paper introduces the systematic estimation of the losses including the effect of one of the manufacturing factors. Similarly, any other manufacturing factor can be included in the pre-designed losses estimations. Post-print / final draft

    In the environment of ever-changing needs of customers, technologies and competitors, the survival of the company depends on how well it researches, develops and implements new products to the market. The need for development of new products relates to many factors: globalization, international competition which is now underway on a global scale, scientific advances and development of production, changes in consumer preferences and consumer behavior. In this study the focus is on the company form a dairy products industry. This study is aimed to defining the role of product innovation launch strategy in an overall enterprise strategy, and to select the optimal combination of its marketing tools. The main purpose of this study is to determine place and the role of innovative marketing based in the innovation process, and to determine launch and positioning strategies in the general concept of an innovative product. The object of the study is the Russian enterprise, which is aimed to achieve a competitive advantage through the continuous production of new products, upgrade existing ones and improve innovation management practices. Research showed that the differentiation strategy is suitable for launching the dairy industry product innovation to a market.

    In this thesis, the influence of the functionalization of graphene and graphite on their magnetic properties was investigated. The functionalization was performed by covalent attaching of a phenyl groups with three different radicals (4-bromoaniline, 4-chloroaniline and 4-nitroaniline). Magnetic properties were measured by SQUID magnetometer. Both pristine graphite and graphene showed strong diamagnetic behavior. For good quality graphite, diamagnetism was found to be temperature-dependent. All samples demonstrated noticeable paramagnetic contribution below 50 K. According to fitting experimental results with Brillouin function and Curie law, it was shown that paramagnetism is provided by small clusters of spins (superparamagnetic behavior). Moreover, the clusters size and spin concentrations were calculated. For the samples functionalized with nitroaniline the antiferromagnetic transition around 120 K was observed. To explain this behavior, a simple model was proposed. Additional analysis of the graphene quality, structure and composition of the samples was carried out by HRTEM, EDS mapping, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques.

    The study of wind turbine aerodynamics is crucial to get the best power output from the available wind flow. This thesis investigate the aerodynamics effect of twist angle variation of the blade on the power output of the turbine. The various aerodynamic parameters are also studied to understand the reasons for the changes in the power output. The well documented NREL 5-MW wind-turbine is considered in this work. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique is used in this study. The turbine effects are implemented in the CFD model by using the Actuator Line Model (ALM). All the simulations are performed using the open-source OpenFOAM software based on the transient Reynold’s Averaged Navier Stoke (RANS) approach. In this work, in total 11 different twist angles are considered to study their respective impact on aerodynamics performance. The results reveal that certain cases in which the twist angle is less than the empirical twist angle gave better power output than the empirical power. There are 7 cases out of 11 which gave better power than the reference power. In the cases of high power, 25%-85% of the blade radius gave high lift coefficient than the reference case. The ratio of lift to drag coefficient is high for the angle of attack between 2◦-10◦.

    The goal of the thesis is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of solar PV business model and point out key factors that affect the efficiency of business model, the results are expected to help in creating new business strategy. The methodology of case study research is chosen as theoretical background to structure the design of the thesis indicating how to choose the right research method and conduction of a case study research. Business model canvas is adopted as the tool for analyzing the case studies of SolarCity and Sungevity. The results are presented through the comparison between the cases studies. Solar services and products, cost in customer acquisition, intellectual resource and powerful sales channels are identified as the major factors for TPO model.

    Bacteriorhodopsin (BR) is a light-sensitive protein, which is a promising material for various technical applications, such as photosensors. The quality of dry thick BR photosensors depends on few performance characteristics. Uniformity of parameters, which have the impact on such characteristics, should be maintained during the preparation or otherwise compensated afterwards. In this thesis, uniformity examination techniques were studied. Experimental setups, which operate, based on studied techniques, were designed. Experiments, which were conducted on constructed setups, revealed a list of dependencies between BR properties and allowed to evaluate properties of sensors.

    A set of models in Aspen plus was built to simulate the direct synthesis process of hydrogen peroxide in a micro-reactor system. This process model can be used to carry out material balance calculation under various experimental conditions. Three thermodynamic property methods were compared by calculating gas solubility and Uniquac-RK method was finally selected for process model. Two different operation modes with corresponding operation conditions were proposed as the starting point of future experiments. Simulations for these two modes were carried out to get the information of material streams. Moreover, some hydrodynamic parameters such as gas/liquid superficial velocity, gas holdup were also calculated with improved process model. These parameters proved the proposed experimental conditions reasonable to some extent. The influence of operation conditions including temperature, pressure and circulation ratio was analyzed for the first operation mode, where pure oxygen was fed into dissolving tank and hydrogen-carbon dioxide mixture was fed into microreactor directly. The preferred operation conditions for the system are low temperature (2°C) and high pressure (30 bar) in dissolving tank. High circulation ratio might be good in the sense that more oxygen could be dissolved and fed into reactor for reactions, but meanwhile hydrodynamics of microreactor should be considered. Furthermore, more operation conditions of reactor gas/liquid feeds in both of two operation modes were proposed to provide guidance for future experiment design and corresponding hydrodynamic parameters were also calculated. Finally, safety issue was considered from thermodynamic point of view and there is no explosion danger at given experimental plan since the released reaction heat will not cause solvent vaporization inside the microchannels. The improvement of process model still needs further study based on the future experimental results.

    To achieve success in a constantly changing environment and with ever-increasing competition, companies must develop their operations continuously. To do this, they must have a clear vision of what they want to be in the future. This vision can be attained through careful planning and strategising. One method of transforming a strategy and vision into an everyday tool used by employees is the use of a balanced performance measurement system. The importance of performance measurement in the implementation of companies' visions and strategies has grown substantially in the last ten years. Measures are derived from the company's critical success factors and from many different perspectives. There are three time dimensions: past, present and future. Many such performance measurement systems have been created since the 1990s. This is a case study whose main objective is to provide a recommendation for how the case company could make use of performance measurement to support strategic management. To answer this question, the study uses literature-based research and empirical research at the case company's premises. The theoretical part of the study consists of two sections: introducing the Balanced Scorecard and discussing how it supports strategic management and change management. The empirical part of this study determines the company's present performance measurement situation through interviews in the company. The study resulted in a recommendation to the company to start developing the Balanced Scorecard system. By setting up this kind process, the company would be able to change its focus more towards the future, beginning to implement a more process-based organisation and getting its employees to work together towards common goals.

    In this work, stabilization of CTO process is studied through soap handling, neutralization process and ultrasound. Studies in soap handling aim to increase the amount of black liquor removed, but also to stabilize the black liquor content in soap. In neutralization, the operation of neutralization process is studied to determine, how to react the changes in black liquor content in soap. Ultrasound is tested to see if it enhances the chemical reactions and stabilizes acidulation process. Two operating models were tested in soap handling. Both models could be used, depending on the soap availability. In laboratory tests, it was noted that black liquor content could not be predicted, so neutralization process should be adjusted differently through automation. It was noted that in laboratory tests, amount of acid used had significant impact on CTO yield, as high amount of acid resulted in stable yield, despite the different black liquor content. Ultrasound did not have effect on the acidulation process, but there were signs of the potential of ultrasound during laboratory testing. For future work, studies in neutralization process should be continued with longer test periods. Also ultrasound testing should be continued, as there was potential in increasing the CTO yield, but also all aspects of ultrasound were not tested in this work. Tässä työssä mäntyöljylaitoksen stabilointia tutkittiin suovan käsittely, neutraloinnin ja ultraäänen kautta. Tutkimukset suovan käsittelyssä tähtäsivät siihen, että suurempi määrä mustalipeää saataisiin erotettua suovasta ja että mustalipeän määrä suovassa olisi tasaisempi. Neutraloinnin toimintaa tutkittiin, jotta voitaisiin selvittää, kuinka reagoida vaihtelevaan mustalipeän määrään suovassa. Ultraääntä testaamalla haettiin parannusta kemiallisiin reaktioihin ja katsottiin, voisiko sen avulla stabiloida palstoitusprosessin. Suovan käsittelyssä testattiin kahta operointimallia. Molemmille malleille löytyi käyttötarkoitus riippuen saatavilla olevan suovan määrästä. Laboratoriokokeissa huomattiin, että mustalipeän määrää suovassa ei voida ennakoida, joten neutraloinnin toimintaa tulisi säätää automaation kautta. Laboratoriokokeissa huomattiin myös, että hapon määrällä on suuri vaikutus mäntyöljyn saantoon. Suurella happomäärällä saatiin tasainen saanto, vaikka mustalipeän määrä vaihteli suuresti näytteissä. Ultraäänellä ei ollut huomattavaa vaikutusta saantoon, mutta laboratoriokokeet näyttivät ultraäänen potentiaalin. Tulevaisuudessa neutraloinnin kokeita tulisi jatkaa pidemmillä testiajoilla. Myös ultraäänen kokeilua tulisi jatkaa, koska sillä on potentiaalia kasvattaa saantoa. Työn aikana myöskään kaikkia ultraäänen aspekteja ei ehditty työn aikana tutkimaan.

    In this research the assembly of I-4000 steering module is researched. The aim of this research is to plan the assembly and resources required for two projects of I-4000 units. Both projects include three steering modules each. The resources concentrated on in this research are the production space, workforce, production time, special equipment and lifting operations. The production plan is applied to an existing production plant of ABB. The base of this research is literature review. The literature review is focused on two main topics: general assembly planning from literature available at LUT Finna-database and information on the product. For the information on the product public and internal documentation is used as a source material. The information on the product is divided in topics of production planning, storing, assembly, lifting and delivery. Any missing and needed information is gathered from interviews with personnel with expertise on the product. Based on the information gathered three variations for the assembly of one steering module is made, focusing on optimizing different aspects of the assembly. One is the suggested version based on the assembly instructions, one minimizes the production time and one the worker capacity needed. Based on the suggested plan, a plan for assembling total of six for two projects is made. This plan is then adapted to the existing production plant. In addition, plan for the execution of one project only is made for the production plant. Two projects are possible to assemble in the existing production plant in 61.5 production days, if no other assembly is made in the plant simultaneously. Maximum number of workers needed is 16. However, this is not possible without alterations to the production plant and further investment in special tools and equipment. Improvements to the production and the production plant are presented in the research. Tutkimuksessa käsitellään I-4000 kääntömoduulin kokoonpanoa ja siihen liittyviä resursseja. Tutkimuksen tavoite on suunnitella tuotanto ja mitoittaa siihen tarvittavat resurssit tuotantotilan, työvoiman, ajan sekä erikoistyökalujen suhteen, kahteen I-4000 projektiin. Tavoitteena on myös sopeuttaa kyseinen tuotanto olemassa olevaan tuotantotehtaaseen. Tutkimuksen perustana käytetään kirjallisuustutkimusta. Kirjallisuustutkimus suoritetaan kahdessa osassa. Ensin etsitään työkaluja tuotannonsuunnitteluun yleisestä kirjallisuudesta liittyen kokoonpanotuotantoon. Tietokantana käytetään LUT Finna-järjestelmää. Sen jälkeen perehdytään tarkemmin tuotteeseen sekä tuotteen kokoonpanoon. Lähteenä käytetään yrityksen omaa dokumentointia, sekä julkista että sisäistä. Tutkittavia osa-alueita ovat tuotannonsuunnittelu, varastointi, kokoonpano, erikoisnostot ja lähetys. Puuttuva ja tarvittava tieto tuotannonsuunnittelua varten hankitaan haastattelemalla henkilöstöä, jolla on erikoisosaamista tuotteesta. Kootun tiedon pohjalta tehdään tuotantosuunnitelmasta kolme variaatiota yhdelle kääntölaitteelle. Yksi tehdään suositeltuna versiona, yksi työvoiman minimoimiseksi ja yksi mahdollisimman nopealle tuotannolle. Suunnitelma sopeutetaan kuudelle kääntölaitteelle kahteen projektiin. Kuuden laitteen suunnitelma sopeutetaan olemassa olevan tuotantolaitoksen resursseihin ja kapasiteettiin. Tämän lisäksi suunnitelma yhdelle projektille, samassa tuotantolaitoksessa, esitellään. Kahden projektin tuotteet voidaan kokoonpanna olemassa olevassa tuotantolaitoksessa 61,5 tuotantopäivässä, jos tuotanto onnistuu suunnitelman mukaisesti. Tuotanto vaatii maksimissaan 16 työntekijää. Tuotannon onnistumista varten työkaluihin liittyviä investointeja sekä muutoksia tuotantolaitokseen on tehtävä. Parannusehdotuksia tuotteen tuotantoon esitellään muun muassa työtuntiseurannan sekä kokoonpanon helpottamiseksi.

Laboratoriokokeissa huomattiin, että mustalipeän määrää suovassa ei voida ennakoida, joten neutraloinnin toimintaa tulisi säätää automaation kautta. Laboratoriokokeissa huomattiin myös, että hapon määrällä on suuri vaikutus mäntyöljyn saantoon. Suurella happomäärällä saatiin tasainen saanto, vaikka mustalipeän määrä vaihteli suuresti näytteissä. Ultraäänellä ei ollut huomattavaa vaikutusta saantoon, mutta laboratoriokokeet näyttivät ultraäänen potentiaalin. Tulevaisuudessa neutraloinnin kokeita tulisi jatkaa pidemmillä testiajoilla. Myös ultraäänen kokeilua tulisi jatkaa, koska sillä on potentiaalia kasvattaa saantoa. Työn aikana myöskään kaikkia ultraäänen aspekteja ei ehditty työn aikana tutkimaan.

    In this research the assembly of I-4000 steering module is researched. The aim of this research is to plan the assembly and resources required for two projects of I-4000 units. Both projects include three steering modules each. The resources concentrated on in this research are the production space, workforce, production time, special equipment and lifting operations. The production plan is applied to an existing production plant of ABB. The base of this research is literature review. The literature review is focused on two main topics: general assembly planning from literature available at LUT Finna-database and information on the product. For the information on the product public and internal documentation is used as a source material. The information on the product is divided in topics of production planning, storing, assembly, lifting and delivery. Any missing and needed information is gathered from interviews with personnel with expertise on the product. Based on the information gathered three variations for the assembly of one steering module is made, focusing on optimizing different aspects of the assembly. One is the suggested version based on the assembly instructions, one minimizes the production time and one the worker capacity needed. Based on the suggested plan, a plan for assembling total of six for two projects is made. This plan is then adapted to the existing production plant. In addition, plan for the execution of one project only is made for the production plant. Two projects are possible to assemble in the existing production plant in 61.5 production days, if no other assembly is made in the plant simultaneously. Maximum number of workers needed is 16. However, this is not possible without alterations to the production plant and further investment in special tools and equipment. Improvements to the production and the production plant are presented in the research. Tutkimuksessa käsitellään I-4000 kääntömoduulin kokoonpanoa ja siihen liittyviä resursseja. Tutkimuksen tavoite on suunnitella tuotanto ja mitoittaa siihen tarvittavat resurssit tuotantotilan, työvoiman, ajan sekä erikoistyökalujen suhteen, kahteen I-4000 projektiin. Tavoitteena on myös sopeuttaa kyseinen tuotanto olemassa olevaan tuotantotehtaaseen. Tutkimuksen perustana käytetään kirjallisuustutkimusta. Kirjallisuustutkimus suoritetaan kahdessa osassa. Ensin etsitään työkaluja tuotannonsuunnitteluun yleisestä kirjallisuudesta liittyen kokoonpanotuotantoon. Tietokantana käytetään LUT Finna-järjestelmää. Sen jälkeen perehdytään tarkemmin tuotteeseen sekä tuotteen kokoonpanoon. Lähteenä käytetään yrityksen omaa dokumentointia, sekä julkista että sisäistä. Tutkittavia osa-alueita ovat tuotannonsuunnittelu, varastointi, kokoonpano, erikoisnostot ja lähetys. Puuttuva ja tarvittava tieto tuotannonsuunnittelua varten hankitaan haastattelemalla henkilöstöä, jolla on erikoisosaamista tuotteesta. Kootun tiedon pohjalta tehdään tuotantosuunnitelmasta kolme variaatiota yhdelle kääntölaitteelle. Yksi tehdään suositeltuna versiona, yksi työvoiman minimoimiseksi ja yksi mahdollisimman nopealle tuotannolle. Suunnitelma sopeutetaan kuudelle kääntölaitteelle kahteen projektiin. Kuuden laitteen suunnitelma sopeutetaan olemassa olevan tuotantolaitoksen resursseihin ja kapasiteettiin. Tämän lisäksi suunnitelma yhdelle projektille, samassa tuotantolaitoksessa, esitellään. Kahden projektin tuotteet voidaan kokoonpanna olemassa olevassa tuotantolaitoksessa 61,5 tuotantopäivässä, jos tuotanto onnistuu suunnitelman mukaisesti. Tuotanto vaatii maksimissaan 16 työntekijää. Tuotannon onnistumista varten työkaluihin liittyviä investointeja sekä muutoksia tuotantolaitokseen on tehtävä. Parannusehdotuksia tuotteen tuotantoon esitellään muun muassa työtuntiseurannan sekä kokoonpanon helpottamiseksi.
