description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Book 2019 EnglishUniversity of London This edited volume collects together peer-reviewed papers that initially emanated from presentations at Digital Classicist seminars and conference panels.\ud \ud This wide-ranging volume showcases exemplary applications of digital scholarship to the ancient world and critically examines the many challenges and opportunities afforded by such research. The chapters included here demonstrate innovative approaches that drive forward the research interests of both humanists and technologists while showing that rigorous scholarship is as central to digital research as it is to mainstream classical studies.\ud \ud As with the earlier Digital Classicist publications, our aim is not to give a broad overview of the field of digital classics; rather, we present here a snapshot of some of the varied research of our members in order to engage with and contribute to the development of scholarship both in the fields of classical antiquity and Digital Humanities more broadly.

In the first part of the volume, the Author, Ingénieur de recherche at the CNRS (équipe ArScAn - Monde grec et systèmes d'information), focuses on the history of applications in France in the second half of the 20th century, starting from the earliest experiments of classification and automation of documentary analysis, which then led to the creation of archaeological databases. The second part of the volume examines the development of electronic publishing in archaeology, with particular reference to the changes brought about by the advent of the Internet and the Open Access movement. Through a careful evaluation of the websites of reference for the dissemination of monographs and journals, the analysis focuses on the different digitization and online dissemination policies for archaeological publications. The results of this systematic survey offer a series of interesting ideas to better understand and satisfy the needs of the archaeological community.

This reconfigured relationship, not surprisingly, is also influencing the digital future of the Jewish-Christian textual corpus referred to as “the Scriptures”. The French title brings together this duality in one expression: Ecritures digitales. The English subtitle makes explicit the double meaning of the unique French word Ecritures: Digital writing, digital Scriptures. With a full French version and an abbreviated English version, this monograph analyzes the main challenges and opportunities for both writing and the Scriptures in the transition to digital culture.; Ecritures digitales souhaite démontrer de quelle manière l’écriture digitale contribue à l’émergence d’une « nouvelle relation du corps humain aux machines », selon le diagnostique posé par Jacques Derrida à propos des effets des nouvelles technologies.

The funded projects are, however, often ad hoc experiments and stand in isolation from other national and international work. What is lacking is an infrastructure to leverage these pioneering projects into systematic investigations, with methods and technical environments that can be taken up by others. The editors of this special issue are both directors of Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH), which aims to set up a virtual bridge between the many digital arts and humanities projects across Europe. DARIAH is being developed with an understanding that infrastructure does not need to imply a seemingly generic and neutral set of technologies, but should be based upon communities.
