description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2018 PolandPublic Library of Science (PLoS) Joanna Jaskowiak; Oliver Tkaczyk; Michal Slota; Jolanta Kwasniewska; Iwona Szarejko;Barley is one of the cereals that are most sensitive to aluminum (Al). Al in acid soils limits barley growth and development and, as a result, its productivity. The inhibition of root growth is a widely accepted indicator of Al stress. Al toxicity is affected by many factors including the culture medium, pH, Al concentration and the duration of the treatment. However, Al can act differently in different species and still Al toxicity in barley deserves study. Since the mechanism of Al toxicity is discussed we cytogenetically describe the effects of different doses of bioavailable Al on the barley nuclear genome—mitotic activity, cell cycle profile and DNA integrity. At the same time, we tested an established deep-water culture (DWC) hydroponics system and analyzed the effects of Al on the root system parameters using WinRHIZO software. We demonstrated the cytotoxic and genotoxic effect of Al in barley root cells. We showed that Al treatment significantly reduced the mitotic activity of the root tip cells and it also induced micronuclei and damaged nuclei. The DNA-damaging effect of Al was observed using the TUNEL test. We define the inhibitory influence of Al on DNA replication in barley. Analysis with the labelling and detection of 5-ethynyl-2‘-deoxyuridin (EdU) showed that the treatment with Al significantly decreased the frequency of S phase cells. We also demonstrated that Al exposure led to changes in the cell cycle profile of barley root tips. The delay of cell divisions observed as increased frequency of cells in G2/M phase after Al treatment was reported using flow cytometry.

The designed sensor has suitable physicochemical properties such as a large Stokes shift and a long-lived intracellular fluorescence. The Schiff base fragment was used for the acid-sensitive release of a fluorophore without affecting the overall stability of the biological systems. Due to the presence of an imine bond in its structure and its unique fluorescent properties, it can be presented as a “pro-dye” for acidic structures such as lysosomes. As a result of an imine bond cleavage, a new fluorescent compound is released, whose substantially shifted excitation and emission wavelengths enable a more selective and effective imaging of lysosomes and endosomes. The presented report provides the chemical, physicochemical and optical profiles as well as biological assays and theoretical calculations.

In the first part are described some theoretical assumption of human capital and creative class, and the history and specifics of the most important social groups in Silesia. In the second part the authors cite the main results of their research conducted in 2010–2011. In interviews, entrepreneurs, experts and policy makers recognized the existence of regional professionals and active individuals who operated at the level of enterprises and local communities. This confirms the assumption of the enclave nature of the formation process of the creative class in Silesia.

It turns out that the framework, originated due to a specific flavor structure, favors the normal hierarchy of light neutrinos and simultaneously narrows down the range of Dirac CP violating phase. It predicts an interesting correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle and the Dirac CP phase too. While the flavor structure indicates an exact degeneracy of the right handed neutrino masses, renormalization group running of the same from a high scale is shown to make it quasi-degenerate and a successful flavor leptogenesis takes place within the allowed parameter space obtained from neutrino phenomenology. Reflections in this field have already been made in literature. But it is worth to analyse again this topic, because there are still a lot of mineral deposits at the Natura 2000 areas, and the growing number of new areas, as well as the existing ones, severely hampers the taking up and pursuit of the geological and mining activity. In the first part of the paper some remarks about the definitions connected with Natura 2000 areas are presented. Later the types of the environmental assessment impact, which may be conducted during the realisation of geological and mining projects are mentioned and discussed. At the end conclusions from this analyse are presented.

Despite numerous studies dedicated to Caesar’s narrative style, there still is a lack of reflection on the possible causes of migrations and the attitude of wandering barbarians to the Roman rule. Contemporary scholars have a tendency to see barbarians as Rome’s ‘eternal’ enemies, and often assume that they ‘must’ have manifested aggressive attitudes. By incorporating anthropological reflection and adopting the ‘other’s’ perspective, it is possible to better understand mechanisms prompting barbarians to look for a new homeland. No less of an important aspect is the reconstruction of Caesar’s way of presenting the phenomenon of migration, which allows us to explain why he treated it as hostile in every case.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2018 PolandPublic Library of Science (PLoS) Joanna Jaskowiak; Oliver Tkaczyk; Michal Slota; Jolanta Kwasniewska; Iwona Szarejko;Barley is one of the cereals that are most sensitive to aluminum (Al).
