For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.euResearch data keyboard_double_arrow_right Dataset 2008 EnglishWorld Data Center for Climate (WDCC) at DKRZ Authors: Kaspar, Frank; Cubasch, Ulrich;Kaspar, Frank; Cubasch, Ulrich;Project: Climate change at the end of a warm stage - DEKLIM-EEM is a joint project consisting out of 9 individual proposals. The project was financially supported by the German Ministry for Education and Research(BMBF) within the framework of the research programme DEKLIM (www.deklim.de). The purpose of the joint project is to reconstruct the climate of past interglacials and to contribute to the understanding of mechanism that are responsible for the transition to a cold stage. This project was coordinated by the Institute for Geosciences, University of Mainz. A description of all individual proposals can be found at: http://www.uni-mainz.de/FB/Geo/Geologie/sedi/index.html The datasets in the CERA database are the results of the project contributions of the Model and Data Group at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology and the Institute for Meteorology at the FU Berlin. The coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model ECHO-G has been used to perform climate simulations of the Eemian interglacial (125,000 years before present) and the subsequent glacial inception (115,000 years before present) by adapting Earth s orbital parameters and greenhouse gas concentrations to conditions of these periods. A simulation of pre-industrial climate is available for comparison. Summary: The purpose of the project DEKLIM-EEM is to reconstruct past interglacials based on proxy data and to understand the processes that are responsible for climatic changes during these interglacials by applying climate models. The data represent monthly average value of a simulation of the climate of the Last Interglacial (LIG) at 125000 years before present (Eemian). Boundary conditions are the same as in the preindustrial control run (ECHOG_A15_PRI), apart from the concentration of greenhouse gases and orbital parameters: Greenhouse gas concentrations are derived from vostok ice core data: 270ppmV CO2, 0.63 ppmV CH4 and 260 ppbV N2O. CFCs are set to zero. Orbital parameters have been calculated with the routine of Berger (1978): Eccentricity: 0.04; Obliquity: 23.79; Precession: 127.3. The simulation has been started with the Levitus ocean climatology. ECHO-G is used as climate model. It is a coupled atmosphere/ocean model (ECHAM4_T30 + HOPE-E_T42er). The simulation was run on a NEC-SX6 (hurrikan). Atmospheric data were originally stored by the model every 12 hours. Ocean data is stored every month. As the boundary conditions are not time dependent, the time access is arbitrary. Related experiments: - ECHOG_A40_LGI: control run, last glacial inception (End of the Eemian, 115 kyrBP, DEKLIM-EEM project), started with Levitus climatology, monthly mean values - ECHOG_A15_PRI preindustrial control run (ca. 1800 A.D., DEKLIM-EEM project), started with Levitus climatology, monthly mean values.

Ion chromatography was performed for aerosol particles smaller than 10 micrometers (PM10 inlet), giving concentrations of sodium and chloride, as well as particulate methylsulfonic acid (MSA). For this, aerosol particles where sampled on quartz fibre filters for 24 hours each. The sampled filters were stored at -20 degrees C on the research vessel, transported frozen back to the chemistry lab of TROPOS and analysed for main ions. Temporal coverage is from December 20, 2016 to March 20, 2017. We give 24-hour quality controlled particulate MSA, sodium and chloride concentrations in microgram per cubic meter for the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) cruise over the Southern Ocean, as part of the ACE-SPACE project. The archived data entities contain data and data products mainly from observations or reconstruction. The eVolv2k project is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in the framework of the priority programme “Antarctic Research with comparative investigations in Arctic ice areas” through grant TO 967/1-1. Summary: This dataset contains ice core-based estimates of volcanic stratospheric sulfur injections covering the years 500 BCE to 1900 CE. Ice core-derived volcanic sulfate deposition composites for Antarctica (Sigl et al., 2014) and Greenland (Sigl et al., 2015) are scaled to volcanic stratospheric sulfur injection based on a method similar to that of Gao et al., (2007). It is forced by the first (_1_) run of the global IPCC SRES A1B (EH5-T63L31_OM-GR1.5L40_A1B_1_6H), which describes a possible future world of very rapid economic growth, global population peaking in mid-century and rapid introduction of new and more efficient technologies with a balance across all energy sources. The model region starts at -19.36/-40.48 (lat/lon in rotated coordinates; centre of lower left corner of the domain) with rotated North Pole at 21.3/-175.0 (lat/lon). The number of grid points is 80/146 (lat/lon). The sponge zone (numerically unreliable boundary grid points) consists of 8 grid boxes at each border. EH5-T63L31_OM-GR1.5L40_A1B_1_6H were nudged during the simulations (spectral nudging, von Storch, H., A spectral nudging technique for dynamical downscaling purposes. Mon. Wea. Rev, 2000 ) The regional model variables include two-dimensional near surface fields and atmospheric fields on 6 pressure levels (200, 500, 700, 850, 925 and 1000 hPa) for zonal and meridional wind, temperature and pressure. The time interval of the output fields is 3 hours. Please contact sga"at"dkrz.de for data request details. The output format is netCDF. Experiment with CLM 2.4.6 on HPC Cluster ( blizzard ).

The IPCC has been established by WMO and UNEP to assess scientific, technical and socio-economic information, relevant for the understanding of climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. A more detailed description about the work of the IPCC can be found at the IPCC homepage ( http://www.ipcc.ch ) and at ( www.grida.no/climate/ipcc ). As a further development the Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES, http://www.grida.no/Climate/ipcc/emission/) have been constructed, to describe (potential) future developments in the global environment with special reference to the production of greenhouse gases and to aerosol precursor emissions. A set of four scenario families (A1, A2, B1, B2) have been developed (see also http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc/emission/index.htm ) The model output data are available at the World Data Center for Climate, Hamburg.( wdc-climate.de ).Projection of future trends based on selected emission scenarios are provided through this project for a great many model variables of ECHAM5/MPIOM . For a selected set of variables the IDCC-Data Distribution Center provides additional data sets from a multitude of models that contribute to the IPCC-AR4 report (project: IPCC_DDC_AR4). Summary: The data represent monthly average values of selected variables for the Data Distribution Centre (DDC) of the Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). (see also: http://ipcc-ddc.cru.uea.ac.uk) The A1B scenario is the part of the A1 family which describes a balance across all energy sources. The experiment has been initialized in year 2000 of the 20C_2 run and continues until year 2100 with anthropogenic forcings (CO2, CH4, N2O, CFCs, O3 and sulfate) according to A1B. The experiment is extended until year 2300 with all concentrations fixed at their levels of year 2100 (stabilization experiment). Datasets with higher resolution (6 hourly) are also available. Technical data to this experiment: The experiment is using ECHAM5.2.02a coupled to MPI-OM Vers. 1.0 GR1.5L40 and was run on a NEC-SX (hurrikan).
