Long before the introduction of a western-style formal education for the Inuit of Canada’s north, the people learned everything they needed to know from their immediate and extended family units. The goal of education for Inuit at that time was simple: learn the skills needed to survive. The current goal of education in Canada is similar, though ‘survival’ has a new context where governments and educators focus more on how to prosper and succeed (in addition to being able to survive). There have been many fundamental shifts in the methodology behind educating Inuit students but each paradigm has intended to better prepare children how to survive in the modern world. In 2012, for example, there is more of a focus on Calculus than on skinning caribou and students learn how to read sheet music instead of watching elders beat a sealskin drum and mimicking the rhythm. Curriculum focuses on scientific or historical facts rather than myths or legends to explain how the world works. This thesis examines the latest two paradigms in educational curricula in the territory now known as Nunavut. In 1999, the territory of Nunavut came into effect when the Nunavut Act was proclaimed. Before this, the area now known as Nunavut was part of a much larger and more culturally diverse Northwest Territories. In the years leading up to 1999, plans began to take shape that would lead to the separation of Inuit inhabited lands. Inuit desired a system of government that reflected their own distinct culture, and enabled them to make decisions and policies for those living within their boundaries. The Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (more easily remembered as IQ), a set of principles that refer to traditional Inuit knowledge and knowledge gathering, is a key example. The new government of Nunavut introduced IQ principles to guide decisions, policies and set values that would create a government that was truly representative of the people it served. Prior to this, the Northwest Territories used a system of education and pedagogy that was adopted primarily from the Province of Alberta. Though some curriculum focused on the Inuit as a people, it was not a system designed to incorporate traditional Inuit knowledge. The educational experiences of former Inuit students before Nunavut was established can be compared to those educational experiences of Inuit after the formation of Nunavut (and after IQ was incorporated into the education of Inuit). This thesis evaluates and compares those differences, documenting shifts in attitude, experiences and stories from the time before Nunavut appeared on maps to the time after the territory of Nunavut was created.

Digital media consumption of magazines is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, yet print remains significant in this genre. The purpose of this study is to determine a model of publishing in which an independent magazine’s printed form can be made more viable because of its digital components, not despite them. Using a strengths-based approach, the study is based in semi-structured interviews with the publishers of eight independent magazines that have used both print and digital media in their publishing practices, exploring themes like motivation, creative freedom, creative control, and career development. Then, the data was sorted through the lens of McLuhan’s “laws of media” tetrad model, allowing for analysis of what is enhanced, obsolesced, retrieved, and reversed in this hybrid publishing model, with the aim of showing what each component can effectively bring in order to support the print edition and to integrate the digital components. The results inform the design and framework of a magazine publishing model in which the print issue is the focus, with support from the digital components. Any independent magazine can apply the results to its current practices or use them to launch a new hybrid offering.

The civil war that started in South Sudan in December 2013 changed the country and it changed the scale and scope of the United Nations mission that was there to assist it. The purpose of this research was to uncover how the decision-making process was conducted in United Nations Mission in South Sudan and it examined the period of January to September 2014. It adopts the perspective of the individual actor and examines their lived experience in the decision-making process. The point of departure for this research is the notion that the internal experiences of the participants are key determinants of the efficiency and effectiveness of decision-making. There was no single body of literature that could provide insight into decision-making in UN peacekeeping operations. A wide range of literatures were used to illuminate an interdisciplinary field of knowledge that ranged from traditional political science to cognitive psychology. Grounded Theory was employed as this methodology provided the analytical flexibility to explore the lived experience of those that contributed to decision-making in UNMISS. It also provided sufficient rigour to develop a theory of how decision-making was conducted in UNMISS. The mid-range theory that emerged from the analysis was grounded in the data and it is a reflection of how people experienced and participated in the process. Key findings from this research are: UNMISS teams were challenged to develop a shared understanding of a complex adaptive system; trust was a critical component of the social process of decision-making; and, the emotional disposition of individual participants was a critical factor in the decision-making process.

This research explores the psychosocial dimensions of a poorly understood profession: the professional aquarist (fish caretaker) in a modern aquarium. Using a qualitative and psychoanalytically-informed methodology, this study explored how aquarists at the Vancouver Aquarium navigate and negotiate any tensions, dilemmas and stressors they experience in their work, including public scrutiny of their occupation, the stressors and traumas inherent in caretaking work and the political, social and organizational challenges specific to the Vancouver Aquarium. Through interviews with five professional aquarists using the Dialogic, Relational Interview method, a thematic analysis illuminates the complexity of the work, including sources of resilience and the forms of defensiveness such as defense mechanisms and coping strategies the aquarists appeared to employ to stay functional. Findings suggest that aquarists experience moral distress regularly throughout the course of their work, often leading to feelings of ambivalence and guilt, and increasing the occupational risk of burnout.

This research is aimed at understanding how masculinities are developed in five males who grew up in a small northern BC community. Using narratives and autoethnography, this research shows that the community, family and education are all contributing factors in developing masculinities. An unexpected factor that was discovered during the interviews was the importance of hockey for four out of the five participants. The way in which masculinities are formed and acted out is very complex, with no one factor being more important than the other. The culture in which these males grew up had a major influence on their development, the way they were raised and the education they received. At times, it seemed like the family was most influential in forming gender identities, as seen through the stories of each participant and myself. The family existed within the community which has a strong connection to traditional gender roles, which can then influence how males grow up, and to what they are exposed. In order for there to be a better understanding of how educators contribute to the forming of masculinities, there needs to be education in teaching programs devoted to this understanding. I have developed a university course as a way of contributing to the knowledge of masculinity development.

This thesis employed a community-based participatory action research approach to explore how community-led design might create a hospital-based community garden and opportunities for food literacy. Design thinking was utilized to facilitate conversation amongst local community members, inclusive of a cross-section of public and private organizations. A survey and interviews were conducted as secondary methods. This inquiry found that design thinking created opportunity for co-creation of knowledge while providing innovative and practical ideas for a hospital-based community garden. Design recommendations suggest ideas for a sustainable hospital-based community garden, integrating key components of aesthetics and education. Main findings include creating an inclusive hospital-based community garden with a supportive structure as an environment for knowledge sharing. An additional finding of transformative learning through collaboration was noted. The research highlights that there is opportunity for community gardens to serve as spaces of pedagogy in the initial design phases and should be considered for future community garden projects.
