    Authors: Cardinali, Daniel Pedro;

    Abstract: Preservation of a robust circadian rhythmicity (particulsarly of the sleep/wake cycle), a proper nutrition and adequate physical exercise are key elements for healthy aging. Aging comes along with circadian alteration, e.g. a disrupted sleep and inflammation, that leads to metabolic disorders. In turn, sleep cycle disturbances cause numerous pathophysiological changes that accelerates the aging process. In the central nervous system, sleep disruption impairs several functions, among them, the clearance of waste molecules. The decrease of plasma melatonin, a molecule of unusual phylogenetic conservation present in all known aerobic organisms, plays a particular role as far as the endocrine sequels of aging. Every day, the late afternoon/nocturnal increase of melatonin synchronizes both the central circadian pacemaker located in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei as well as myriads of peripheral cellular circadian clocks. This is called the “chronobiotic effect” of melatonin, the methoxyindole being the prototype of the endogenous family of chronobiotic agents. In addition, melatonin exerts a significant cytoprotective action by buffering free radicals and reversing inflammation via down regulation of proinflammatory cytokines, suppression of low degree inflammation and prevention of insulin resistance. Because of these properties melatonin has been advocated to be a potential therapeutic tool in COVID 19 pandemic. Melatonin administration to aged animals counteracts a significant number of senescence-related changes. In humans, melatonin is effective both as a chronobiotic and a cytoprotective agent to maintain a healthy aging. Circulating melatonin levels are consistently reduced in the metabolic syndrome, ischemic and non-ischemic cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative disorders like the Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. The potential therapeutic value of melatonin has been suggested by a limited number of clinical trials generally employing melatonin in the 2–10 mg/day range. However, from animal studies the cytoprotective effects of melatonin need higher doses to become apparent (i.e. in the 100 mg/day range). Hence, controlled studies employing melatonin doses in this range are urgently needed.

    Authors: Reiter, R.; Sharma, Ramaswamy; Castillo, Rafael; Marik, Paul E.; +3 Authors

    Abstract: Two highly relevant studies related to SARS-CoV-2 and coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and supporting the use of melatonin to prevent and treat this serious infection were published recently. Campos-Codo and colleagues [1] documented experimentally their claim that drugs which specifically target hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) would likely have great therapeutic value in treating COVID-19. The second report is a retrospective analysis based on the clinical experience at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center with the use of drugs to treat respiratory distress in COVID-19-infected patients who required endotracheal intubation [2]. Hyperinflammatory monocytes/macrophages accumulate in abundance in the lower respiratory tract where they play a key role in determining the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infections. Campos-Codo, et al. [1] found that monocytes/macrophages infected with the SARSCoV-2 virus reprogram their metabolism from the conventional mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) to the (usually) pathological cytosolic glycolysis. This so-called Warburg-type metabolism is aided by the inadequately controlled elevated blood glucose levels of diabetic patients, which enhances cellular glycolysis, viral replication and hastens development of a severe respiratory infection resulting from the elevated cytokine release (“cytokine storm”).

    Authors: Sáenz Cavia, Adela; Delfino, Gisela;

    Resumen: Se estima que, en Argentina, dependiendo de la definición de la pobreza que se adopte (monetaria o por privaciones en el ejercicio de derechos), entre 47% y 60% de la infancia entre 0 y 17 años vive en situación de pobreza o indigencia y residen en asentamientos o villas (Tuñón, 2020; Tuñón y Poy, 2019). Se ha verificado que ser pobre por ingresos o indigente incrementa de manera notoria las posibilidades de padecer malestar psicológico y experimentar poca satisfacción con la vida (Bonfiglio et al., 2020). Con el fin de mejorar las competencias emocionales y sociales y de promover la resiliencia de personas que viven en situación de pobreza o vulnerabilidad, se aplicó un programa de intervención en referentes comunitarios de estos barrios, cuyo objetivo fue el desarrollo de competencias que contribuyeran a su rol de liderazgo social. El programa se aplicó unos meses antes de que se declarara la pandemia por Covid-19 y participaron casi 50 líderes, referentes y educadores sociales de cinco organizaciones de base comunitaria de barrios vulnerables del conurbano bonaerense. Se les brindó un marco de contención y herramientas de gestión emocional que mostraron ser valiosas entonces y, especialmente, durante la pandemia.

    Resumen: El presente trabajo tiene como propósito describir una experiencia realizada desde el Sistema Institucional de Educación a Distancia (SIED) de la Universidad Católica Argentina, durante el periodo 2020-2021 en el contexto del Covid19. La plataforma EVA-UCA en los últimos años era un entorno virtual de apoyo a la presencialidad, pero en marzo de 2020 junto al software de teleconferencias Zoom se transformaron en el aula sin paredes para el desarrollo de propuestas de enseñanza y de aprendizaje. Allí surgieron los siguientes interrogantes: ¿Cómo enseñamos a distancia sin perder la calidad y calidez de la educación superior? ¿Qué propuestas favorecen la evaluación desde una postura integral? Desde un paradigma centrado en los estudiantes, situándonos en un modelo basado en el desarrollo de competencias desde la perspectiva humanista y cristiana. Se incrementaron y acompañaron las propuestas de formación docente continua de la universidad con espacios de reflexión y diálogo desde la perspectiva de los entornos virtuales de aprendizaje. Como resultado, se confeccionó un instrumento que presenta: a) tres propuestas de evaluación: objetivas, cualitativas y procedimientos de evaluación auténtica: b) treinta y dos actividades afines a las propuestas mencionadas para realizar desde la plataforma EVA y; c) cuatro modalidades de evaluación; asincrónica, sincrónica, individual o grupal.

    Authors: Poy Piñeiro, Santiago; Pla, Jésica Lorena;

    Si bien la pandemia tiene un sustrato biológico y ha adquirido un carácter global, pocas dudas caben acerca de que la forma en la cual los países la transitaron –y, al parecer, la seguirán transitando– no puede desligarse de sus particulares configuraciones históricas y sociales. En América Latina se han observado nuevos retrocesos en un corto período de tiempo en materia de bienestar social y económico (Cepal, 2021c). De acuerdo con las evidencias disponibles, el impacto sin precedentes de las medidas de restricción sobre la dinámica económica y el funcionamiento del mercado de trabajo fue el principal canal de transmisión de esta situación crítica (Maurizio, 2021). En el caso argentino, el escenario abierto por la pandemia de covid-19 ha profundizado las preocupaciones sobre los problemas vinculados a la pobreza, la marginalidad y las desigualdades sociales, que históricamente se han asentado sobre desequilibrios económicos estructurales. El libro que aquí presentamos sintetiza los aportes de investigadores e investigadoras de distintas regiones de la Argentina que procuraron analizar en tiempo real los efectos de la irrupción de la pandemia de covid-19 sobre la desigualdad, a partir de las herramientas de la estadística social y el uso de dos encuestas de hogares: la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares (EPH) del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (Indec) y la Encuesta de la Deuda Social Argentina (EDSA) del Observatorio de la Deuda Social Argentina (ODSA-UCA)...

    Resumen: En Argentina, la situación socioeconómica de los hogares y el precio de los alimentos lleva a una vulnerabilidad alimentaria cada vez más grave, agudizada aún más por la pandemia del COVID-19. Este artículo busca establecer los efectos generados por el Aislamiento Social Preventivo y Obligatorio (ASPO) en la inseguridad alimentaria de las niñas, niños y adolescentes del Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (AMBA), y determinar si las políticas sociales implementadas por el gobierno ayudaron o no a evitar una profundización del fenómeno. Esta investigación fue abordada a través de un estudio longitudinal de panel sobre una muestra de hogares con niñas/os del AMBA, con base en la Encuesta de la Deuda Social Argentina (EDSA). Los resultados disponen que las políticas públicas de transferencias de ingresos y ayudas alimentarias directas implementadas no han sido suficientes para garantizar la seguridad alimentaria de estas poblaciones e incluso se han revelado insuficientes para sostener los niveles de incidencia de la inseguridad alimentaria previos al COVID- 19.

    Authors: Salvia, Agustín; Zurita, Carlos;

    La expansión por todo el planeta de la pandemia COVID-19 ha instalado una nueva realidad socioeconómica global de consecuencias todavía impredecibles. La virulencia de la enfermedad, sumado a la precariedad de los saberes y de los recursos orientados a su adecuado manejo, obligó a la mayoría de los gobiernos del mundo a tomar inéditas medidas de confinamiento social obligatorio. Estas medidas han permitido disminuir los contagios, evitar el colapso de los sistemas sanitarios y preservar vidas. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo el confinamiento de gran parte de la población mundial ha paralizado la actividad económica generando una contracción que se estima la más severa desde la Gran Depresión. En este contexto, la Argentina no ha sido una excepción. Las medidas de aislamiento social obligatorio, en el marco de la emergencia sanitaria, han tenido un impacto regresivo a nivel productivo, laboral y social, así como para los actores gremiales que regulan la dinámica de acumulación, el empleo y la distribución del ingreso. No escapa a la realidad nacional que esta crisis mundial golpea duramente a una sociedad afectada no sólo por desigualdades estructurales, atravesada por sistemas de empleo, salud y seguridad social fuertemente segmentados, sino además por una acumulación de estancamiento, alta inflación, déficit fiscal, crisis de deuda, desempleo estructural y pobreza crónica; todo lo cual se agravó con la irrupción de la pandemia y las políticas de prevención, sin que exista todavía un claro horizonte de solución sanitaria y recuperación económica...

    Resumen: En el marco de la crisis sanitaria global que afrontamos, viejas preguntas y viejos problemas vuelven con fuerza. La idea de desarrollo es clave tanto para afrontar las consecuencias inmediatas de esta crisis, como para revertir problemas estructurales de desigualdad en nuestros territorios latinoamericanos. Para ello, la propuesta de Albert Otto Hirschman sigue estando vigente en tanto realiza algunas críticas a las ideas más canónicas de la teoría de desarrollo desde la experiencia de trabajo en los llamados países subdesarrollados. Con la precaución de mantener una mirada crítica, realizaremos un breve recorrido por una selección propia de dos principios y dos mecanismos elaborados por el autor, útiles para pensar la gestión del desarrollo.

    Resumen: Los avances de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC) permiten acceder en tiempo real a una cantidad ingente de datos, a través de los cuales es posible conocer el comportamiento de hechos sociales. En este escenario, la actual pandemia por SARS-CoV-2 ha permitido, bajo cuestionables criterios de inmediatez y urgencia, circular información que genera realidad e impacta en la toma de decisiones; y, además, ha favorecido la apropiación del dato, exponiendo a las personas a violaciones de sus derechos fundamentales. Ambos asuntos son sensibles para América Latina y el Caribe, región que hoy se presenta no sólo como el epicentro de la pandemia sino también de las desigualdades. La contribución que desde la reflexión y deliberación bioética puede realizarse en esta materia, adquiere especial relevancia con vistas a generar un nuevo pacto para el tratamiento de los datos.

    Authors: Gherlone, Laura;

    Resumen: El ser humano coexiste con la muerte, raíz de un universo emocional que ha dado lugar a una variedad cultural sorprendente de expresiones simbólicomateriales. En la actualidad, este universo se hace cuerpo al desmaterializarse en el ambiente digital, lo cual permite a los estados afectivos propagarse de manera espacial y temporal. Además, convierte a la muerte en un “problema” –una presencia difundida– que tipologiza nuestro tiempo. La presente contribución pretende abordar este fenómeno enfocándose en la relación entre la muerte impredecible y el imaginario colectivo. Se hará específica referencia a un constructo audiovisual muy popular, el Coffin dance meme, creado en la red durante la explosión de la pandemia por covid-19.

    Authors: Cardinali, Daniel Pedro;

    Authors: Sáenz Cavia, Adela; Delfino, Gisela;

    Resumen: Se estima que, en Argentina, dependiendo de la definición de la pobreza que se adopte (monetaria o por privaciones en el ejercicio de derechos), entre 47% y 60% de la infancia entre 0 y 17 años vive en situación de pobreza o indigencia y residen en asentamientos o villas (Tuñón, 2020; Tuñón y Poy, 2019). Se ha verificado que ser pobre por ingresos o indigente incrementa de manera notoria las posibilidades de padecer malestar psicológico y experimentar poca satisfacción con la vida (Bonfiglio et al., 2020). Con el fin de mejorar las competencias emocionales y sociales y de promover la resiliencia de personas que viven en situación de pobreza o vulnerabilidad, se aplicó un programa de intervención en referentes comunitarios de estos barrios, cuyo objetivo fue el desarrollo de competencias que contribuyeran a su rol de liderazgo social. El programa se aplicó unos meses antes de que se declarara la pandemia por Covid-19 y participaron casi 50 líderes, referentes y educadores sociales de cinco organizaciones de base comunitaria de barrios vulnerables del conurbano bonaerense. Se les brindó un marco de contención y herramientas de gestión emocional que mostraron ser valiosas entonces y, especialmente, durante la pandemia.

    Resumen: El presente trabajo tiene como propósito describir una experiencia realizada desde el Sistema Institucional de Educación a Distancia (SIED) de la Universidad Católica Argentina, durante el periodo 2020-2021 en el contexto del Covid19. La plataforma EVA-UCA en los últimos años era un entorno virtual de apoyo a la presencialidad, pero en marzo de 2020 junto al software de teleconferencias Zoom se transformaron en el aula sin paredes para el desarrollo de propuestas de enseñanza y de aprendizaje. Allí surgieron los siguientes interrogantes: ¿Cómo enseñamos a distancia sin perder la calidad y calidez de la educación superior? ¿Qué propuestas favorecen la evaluación desde una postura integral? Desde un paradigma centrado en los estudiantes, situándonos en un modelo basado en el desarrollo de competencias desde la perspectiva humanista y cristiana. Se incrementaron y acompañaron las propuestas de formación docente continua de la universidad con espacios de reflexión y diálogo desde la perspectiva de los entornos virtuales de aprendizaje. Como resultado, se confeccionó un instrumento que presenta: a) tres propuestas de evaluación: objetivas, cualitativas y procedimientos de evaluación auténtica: b) treinta y dos actividades afines a las propuestas mencionadas para realizar desde la plataforma EVA y; c) cuatro modalidades de evaluación; asincrónica, sincrónica, individual o grupal.

    Authors: Poy Piñeiro, Santiago; Pla, Jésica Lorena;

    Si bien la pandemia tiene un sustrato biológico y ha adquirido un carácter global, pocas dudas caben acerca de que la forma en la cual los países la transitaron –y, al parecer, la seguirán transitando– no puede desligarse de sus particulares configuraciones históricas y sociales. En América Latina se han observado nuevos retrocesos en un corto período de tiempo en materia de bienestar social y económico (Cepal, 2021c). De acuerdo con las evidencias disponibles, el impacto sin precedentes de las medidas de restricción sobre la dinámica económica y el funcionamiento del mercado de trabajo fue el principal canal de transmisión de esta situación crítica (Maurizio, 2021). En el caso argentino, el escenario abierto por la pandemia de covid-19 ha profundizado las preocupaciones sobre los problemas vinculados a la pobreza, la marginalidad y las desigualdades sociales, que históricamente se han asentado sobre desequilibrios económicos estructurales. El libro que aquí presentamos sintetiza los aportes de investigadores e investigadoras de distintas regiones de la Argentina que procuraron analizar en tiempo real los efectos de la irrupción de la pandemia de covid-19 sobre la desigualdad, a partir de las herramientas de la estadística social y el uso de dos encuestas de hogares: la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares (EPH) del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (Indec) y la Encuesta de la Deuda Social Argentina (EDSA) del Observatorio de la Deuda Social Argentina (ODSA-UCA)...

    Authors: Tuñón, Ianina; Sánchez, María Emilia;

    Resumen: En Argentina, la situación socioeconómica de los hogares y el precio de los alimentos lleva a una vulnerabilidad alimentaria cada vez más grave, agudizada aún más por la pandemia del COVID-19. Este artículo busca establecer los efectos generados por el Aislamiento Social Preventivo y Obligatorio (ASPO) en la inseguridad alimentaria de las niñas, niños y adolescentes del Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (AMBA), y determinar si las políticas sociales implementadas por el gobierno ayudaron o no a evitar una profundización del fenómeno. Esta investigación fue abordada a través de un estudio longitudinal de panel sobre una muestra de hogares con niñas/os del AMBA, con base en la Encuesta de la Deuda Social Argentina (EDSA). Los resultados disponen que las políticas públicas de transferencias de ingresos y ayudas alimentarias directas implementadas no han sido suficientes para garantizar la seguridad alimentaria de estas poblaciones e incluso se han revelado insuficientes para sostener los niveles de incidencia de la inseguridad alimentaria previos al COVID- 19.

    Authors: Salvia, Agustín; Zurita, Carlos;

    La expansión por todo el planeta de la pandemia COVID-19 ha instalado una nueva realidad socioeconómica global de consecuencias todavía impredecibles. La virulencia de la enfermedad, sumado a la precariedad de los saberes y de los recursos orientados a su adecuado manejo, obligó a la mayoría de los gobiernos del mundo a tomar inéditas medidas de confinamiento social obligatorio. Estas medidas han permitido disminuir los contagios, evitar el colapso de los sistemas sanitarios y preservar vidas. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo el confinamiento de gran parte de la población mundial ha paralizado la actividad económica generando una contracción que se estima la más severa desde la Gran Depresión. En este contexto, la Argentina no ha sido una excepción. Las medidas de aislamiento social obligatorio, en el marco de la emergencia sanitaria, han tenido un impacto regresivo a nivel productivo, laboral y social, así como para los actores gremiales que regulan la dinámica de acumulación, el empleo y la distribución del ingreso. No escapa a la realidad nacional que esta crisis mundial golpea duramente a una sociedad afectada no sólo por desigualdades estructurales, atravesada por sistemas de empleo, salud y seguridad social fuertemente segmentados, sino además por una acumulación de estancamiento, alta inflación, déficit fiscal, crisis de deuda, desempleo estructural y pobreza crónica; todo lo cual se agravó con la irrupción de la pandemia y las políticas de prevención, sin que exista todavía un claro horizonte de solución sanitaria y recuperación económica...
