The School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology, TU Dublin, Spring Newsletter captured the many events, research, awards, significant contributions and special civic and community activities which the students and staff members of the school have successfully completed up to the Spring period of 2019. The successful completion of these activities would not be possible without the active and on-going support of the 'INSPIRED' friends of Culinary Arts (school supporters) and our school's industry association supporters.

The Leather Product Design Canvas makes use of a conceptual and graphical structure comprising content boxes and specific impulse questions to raise awareness and guide design processes. It aims at supporting the product development and design process of leather products to create more sustainable products. This shall be achieved by providing a quick and multi-perspective overview of relevant topics and considerations. One reason for this approach is that in many cases the designers of leather products such as shoes or bags do not necessarily need to be leather experts. Even interdisciplinary design teams might not include experts that understand both issues of sustainable development and material properties of this versatile material. Moreover, the complexity of the material leather and its various types of application would usually require a number of different experts to cover the most relevant topics related to sustainable development in order to identify possible rebound effects and systemic interdependencies of certain design decisions. The herewith presented canvas does by no means compensate for these expertise but aims at empowering design teams to take first steps towards more sustainable leather products based on a broadened scope while identifying knowledge gaps or the need for specific experts to be consulted or included in the design team.

The call for tutorials at UCC'19 and BDCAT'19 attracted submissions from Australia and Europe. The tutorial chairs reviewed and accepted two revised tutorials, and decided to award a third spot on a FCFS basis to ensure that conference attendees have access to learning resources across all conference topics.

Tradicionalmente, la regulación y mantenimiento de la frecuencia de los sistemas eléctricos ha sido suministrada y asegurada por las fuentes de generación de energía eléctrica tradicionales (nucleares, térmicas o hidroeléctricas). Sin embargo, en los últimos años, se ha promocionado el empleo de energías renovables (eólica y solar) debido a su carácter limpio (no contaminante) y renovable (no se agotan), ventajas fundamentales frente a las centrales convencionales. Este cambio está afectando de manera directa al propio funcionamiento del sistema eléctrico, necesitando que los servicios hasta ahora proporcionados sólo por la generación clásica deban también ser compartidos por todos los puntos de generación. En este nuevo escenario, se hace necesario contar con el desarrollo y adaptación de nuevas herramientas y soluciones que faciliten la integración de fuentes renovables sin que ello suponga una merma en las capacidades del sistema eléctrico en términos de estabilidad y de respuesta ante contingencias. Así pues, el objetivo principal de esta tesis consiste en el estudio, implementación y evaluación de sistemas eléctricos con alta penetración del recurso eólico y solar fotovoltaico con el fin de evaluar posibles soluciones para emular respuestas similares a las que se obtendrían con generación clásica, integrando así de manera efectiva el recurso renovable al control de la frecuencia del sistema eléctrico. Por tanto, la solución aquí estudiada favorece la integración masiva de recursos renovables, dentro de un escenario de estabilidad del sistema eléctrico apoyado por estas instalaciones, y donde la eliminación paulatina de las centrales clásicas debe emularse de manera que el sistema eléctrico ofrezca la misma fiabilidad que se percibe ante la presencia de generación convencional. Sólo así se conseguirá fomentar de manera argumentada las posibilidades tangibles de integración a gran escala de recursos renovables, que poseen una variabilidad en sus niveles de generación (debido a su dependencia en recursos naturales) y que además se encuentran "desacopladas" de la red debido a un sistema de electrónica de potencia.
