The economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic sharply reduced mobility and economic activity, disrupting the lives of people around the globe. This brief presents estimates on the crisis’ impact on labor markets in 39 countries based on high-frequency phone survey (HFPS) data collected between April and July 2020. Workers in these countries experienced severe labor market disruptions following the COVID-19 outbreak. 34 percent of respondents reported stopping work, 20 percent of wage workers reported lack of payment for work performed, 9 percent reported job changes due to the pandemic, and 62 percent reported income loss in their household. Measures of work stoppage and income loss in the HFPS are generally consistent with GDP growth projections in Latin America and the Caribbean but not in Sub-Saharan Africa, indicating that the phone survey data contributes valuable new information about the impacts of the crisis. Ensuring availability of such critical data in the future will require investments into statistical and physical infrastructure as well as human capital to set up Emergency Observatories, which can rapidly deploy phone surveys to inform decision makers.

Revista de Medios y Educación Authors: Domínguez Castillo, José Gabriel; Cisneros Cohernour, Edith Juliana; Ortega Maldonado, Alvaro; Ortega Carrillo, José Antonio;Domínguez Castillo, José Gabriel; Cisneros Cohernour, Edith Juliana; Ortega Maldonado, Alvaro; Ortega Carrillo, José Antonio; This article arises as a result of the great uncertainty that currently exists in the educational context as a consequence of the implementation of an emergency model of distance education in times of COVID-19 throughout the world. The work provides the perspective of 2063 students from diverse contexts in the Mexican Southeast, who answered an instrument that evaluates four domains of the distance learning process: assignments and strategies, course design, communication and interaction, content and attitude. There were notable differences in the perceptions of urban and rural students in all the domains evaluated. Communication and interaction obtained the highest scores for students in rural and urban contexts, in contrast, the lowest scores recorded for both contexts were: Design of assignments and strategies for urban contexts and the Attitude domain for rural contexts. One of the conclusions of this study shows the disadvantages of students belonging to rural communities and the possible increase in inequality gaps in access to knowledge during confinement.

Dezinformace v období této krize přinesly názorové proudy, které u občanů vyvolávaly nechuť dodržovat opatření a odmítat nebezpečí šíření tohoto viru. As a result of the pandemic, two dangerous phenomena have emerged that have not made it easier to resolve the crisis. The first phenomenon is the phenomenon of vaccine opponents also known as anti-vax. The second phenomenon is desinformation also known as fake news. Desinformation in the period time of this crisis brought opinions that made citizens disrespect measures against the spread of virus. At the same time was undermined the confidence, efficacy and safety of vaccine against this virus.

The evolving situation due to COVID-19 is causing a crisis not only in terms of health but also in economic terms. Companies are encountering urgent solutions to avoid financial problems. In both theory and practice the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the transport companies mostly is negative, but there are not enough researches of this topic due to novelty of situation. Part of the authors do not agree on some issues, so this thesis will be relevant for a long time. According to literature review, is is observed that transport companies are experiencing a significant decrease in profits during the first and second waves of COVID-19 outbreak. The study uses the expert survey to identify the most affected indicators of profitability and liquidity of the road transport companies. The relative financial ratios and the study of the dependence of financial results on the coronavirus outbreak show that there is an unequal correlation relationship between the number of quarantine days in Lithuania and the financial rations of road transport companies. It is likely that the COVID-19 crisis may have both positive and negative effects or no effect on the financial performance of transport companies. Immediate and continuous involvement in monitoring and controlling on the financial situation of the company is very important during COVID-19 crisis.

In the context of this research work, new analogues of the hormone melatonin, which is the main circadian regulator in our body, affecting a number of normal functions, were designed, synthesized and will be evaluated in terms of their pharmacological action. The introductory part provides some general information on melatonin, such as its biosynthesis, metabolism, important pharmacological actions, and therapeutic uses. Data are reported on the pharmacokinetic and toxicological profile of the hormone, as well as its role as a dietary supplement. Also, some new data are presented, regarding the adjuvant use of melatonin in the treatment against COVID-19. Next, the categories of melatonin’s binding sites in the body through which it exerts its actions are analyzed, along with data on the SAR of the hormone with its receptors, which are of major importance in the design of the new compounds recorded herein. The next section presents the objectives of this work and the synthetic procedures followed for the preparation of the melatonin derivatives of the general type 11, 12, 13 and 15. In the last chapter, the pharmacological protocols referring to the binding affinity and selectivity of the new analogues for the hMT1 and hMT2 receptors are presented.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.euapps Other research product2021 EnglishOU Authors: Lombardozzi, Lorena; Copperman, Jeanette; Auma, Carolyn;Lombardozzi, Lorena; Copperman, Jeanette; Auma, Carolyn; This paper analyses the crisis of social reproduction through the dynamics of urban food provision in times of COVID-19. The rise of food poverty due to austerity policies resulted in an upsurge of political mobilisation and mushrooming of local coping strategies to support the social reproduction of cities. In this allegedly pandemic-led crisis the responsibility to compensate for the lack of care services, food and wages among vulnerable groups has become increasingly individualised because “austerity involves a territorial reworking of the state through which forms of care, social reproduction and intervention are increasingly sourced from communities themselves” (Strong, 2020; p.212). Through semi-structured interviews with civil society organizations and charities, ethnographic research with local food groups and food banks in North-East London and analysis of secondary material, this paper firstly explores how local food solidarity initiatives organise and mobilise people, manage commodities and urban space to tackle food poverty in North-East London during the COVID19 pandemic. Secondly, by using the concept of localised resistance to the corporate-led food system, this paper explores the inter-scalar tensions between the state-level and localised food solidarity initiatives to highlight the inadequacy of the current food system in tackling urban food insecurity. Through a social reproduction framework, the paper shows that the state-led food strategies, based on short-term, scattered, top-down and under-funded initiatives have been both the cause and consequence of the current food poverty crisis. Ultimately, the article proposes to reverse the order of causation: rather than claiming that COVID-19 has created a food crisis, we claim that COVID-19 has only shed light on preexisting contradictions in the provision of food in urban areas. The crisis has for long been contrasted by local strategies of solidarity, often in contraposition with both market and state.
