The School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology, TU Dublin, Spring Newsletter captured the many events, research, awards, significant contributions and special civic and community activities which the students and staff members of the school have successfully completed up to the Spring period of 2019. The successful completion of these activities would not be possible without the active and on-going support of the 'INSPIRED' friends of Culinary Arts (school supporters) and our school's industry association supporters.

The call for tutorials at UCC'19 and BDCAT'19 attracted submissions from Australia and Europe. The tutorial chairs reviewed and accepted two revised tutorials, and decided to award a third spot on a FCFS basis to ensure that conference attendees have access to learning resources across all conference topics.

William Vincent Wallace Bicentenary Recitals Wexford Festival Opera, Oct.-Nov. 2012. These unique recitals of drawing-room music and opera excerpts celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Irish composer, William Vincent Wallace (1812–1865) and focus particularly on his unknown songs and piano music. Wallace was one of the most extraordinary musical personalities of the nineteenth century – not only a composer, but a virtuoso on two instruments (piano and violin) and a global traveller. He visited parts of the world that no other Irish musician had set foot in and widened his sphere of influence by establishing a music school in Sydney, Australia where he is still regarded as the first great instrumentalist to visit that continent. From here he blazed a trail through South America where he was maestro to a season of Italian opera in Mexico City. A new career began as impresario before his return to London where his own first opera, Maritana, was an outstanding success. Tales of his adventures and escapades certainly helped to promote the popularity of his publications, particularly of his salon music. He was then just thirty-three years old and had already had enough experiences to fill several lifetimes.

This case study deals with the following issues: industry analysis and understanding the business system; generic competitive strategies; innovating business practice and sustaining competitive advantage.

Blooming Clothing was established in 1985 by O’Byrne and two other partners. The aim was to specialise in a niche of the women’s outerwear market: maternity wear. The company started business with a retail outlet in Dublin and sold maternity wear under the Blooming label, which it outsourced through local suppliers. When this arrangement proved unsatisfactory, Blooming turned to manufacturing its own lines.

As he eased his car out the gates of Castlemartin on a lovely evening in May 1995, Redmond O’Donoghue mused on the meeting which had just finished. Dr A.J.F. O’Reilly, non executive Chairman of Waterford Wedgwood Plc, had brought senior management of the group to his Irish residence in County Kildare for an informal discussion on future strategy. The group comprised two distinct major subsidiaries, Waterford Crystal which produced crystal glass and Josiah Wedgwood whose main business was ceramic tableware. Redmond was Chief Operating officer of Waterford Crystal. With the impending retirement of the current Chief Executive, Paddy Galvin, Redmond was likely to succeed him as Chief Executive and so would have overall responsibility for developing and implementing future strategy for Waterford Crystal.
